: carter fuel pump making 2-3 psi

Alright,

I finally get my 461 motor going and after my brand new Holly pump produces nothing but air, I go out and buy a Carter pump which is supposed to do 120 g.p.h. I notice that it's only doing about 2-3 p.s.i. during my initial start up which was enough to keep the car going, but really concerns me. The gauge is dead-on as I swapped it back to my other car, which is running an identical XRP line from the pump to the float bowls. My only thinking is the 90 degree inlet fitting is jacking me up. My girlfriend is an engineer and says that the Earl's inline fuel filter(-8 AN) which she says has a check valve which isn't big enough in her opinion. Any ideas which seems more valid, the 90 degree fitting or the -8 fuel filter check valve? Also the fitting coming off the pump is a 45 degree -8AN.

Thanx, Mike

My 120 gph Carter on my 461 runs about 7psi with 90* fittings so I doubt that is your problem. Are you sure that you are not pulling air in someplace?

put a guage before the check valve, that'll tell you if its a problem.

No, I'm not sure that I'm not sucking in air from someplace else. Seems unlikely, but possible. I've heard people knocking the 90 degree fitting usage, although I've never had a problem with them.

I think it's a kink in the fuel line, collasped fuel line,or a clogged fuel sock in the tank. The later one happened to me! graemlins/waving.gif

Yup, sounds like it could be the crusties are built up in the pickup tube or the filter sock in your gas tank. It's also possible that your pickup tube has a hole rusted in it inside the tank up high, or the rubber hookup line at the tank maybe even has a hole or split in it.

If it is a liquid filled gauge anywhere near a source of heat it is not accurate. Is the car falling down when you give it some gas for a couple of gears? 2-3 psi would not cut it if that is what it is really getting

If you are talking about idle, low or no load
pressure none of the fittings or filters are going to lower the pressure, you have to have some flow to lower it.
As was posted above, it is most likley on the inlet side of the pump, anywhere from tank to pump inlet ;)
