View Full Version : Mystery Holes
Steve Johnson Jun 25th, 07, 11:51 PM I have four holes in my trunk under the package tray shelf. In the two holes closest to the rear there is a loop mounted on the underside with two bolts. To the front of the loop there are two more holes with nothing attached, what should be attached there. This is for a 70.
smittyocat Jun 26th, 07, 2:02 AM Rear Defog blower?
Steve Johnson Jun 26th, 07, 2:09 AM I didn't say it right, it's the trunk flooring, not the package tray sheet metal.
smittyocat Jun 26th, 07, 2:13 AM could you post a pic?
rubadub Jun 26th, 07, 2:15 AM nitros bottle?
mattiepschevelle Jun 26th, 07, 2:24 AM stereo amplifier?
smittyocat Jun 26th, 07, 2:28 AM The amp would be mounted on bottom of the package ,tray he is saying its on the trunk floor beneath the tray
Steve Johnson Jun 26th, 07, 5:38 PM Had a chance to go to a wrecking yard today. I looked at about 10 different 70 chevelles, not one had my holes. Here are two pics showing inside the trunk and the trunk from the underside.http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/trunk_holes_inside.jpghttp://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/trunk_holes_underside.jpg
smittyocat Jun 26th, 07, 5:55 PM Doesn't look like a factory installation to me.
427chevelle Jun 26th, 07, 6:06 PM I bought a 69 that had numerous holes in the bottom of the trunk. Previous owner said that he had a fuel cell in the trunk.
Widetires22 Jun 26th, 07, 6:48 PM The 2nd picture looks like a hole that was drilled sometime after the coating was put on, doesn't it?
Steve Johnson Jun 26th, 07, 7:14 PM The hole without a bolt has dust from some sanding I did on the underside of the package tray sheet metal. When I rubbed off the dust I found undercoat the same as around that area. Looks like I will need to fill some holes. I'm still curious about the metal loop though.
smittyocat Jun 26th, 07, 8:24 PM Maybe it was to tie the bodies down so they didnt slide aroune :))
Bill70 Jun 26th, 07, 11:50 PM Didn't some cars come with a metal vapor canister to capture gas fumes as part of the emissions equipment?? I think they had these on full size cars (ex. Impala).
rubadub Jun 27th, 07, 2:19 AM There was something on a chevelle, like a traction dispenser?
Bowtie-72 Jun 27th, 07, 10:34 AM I don't think it's original. The loop has 2 sets of holes and a shoddy bend to it. It reminds me of a cheap muffler hanger strap that has been bent. Why, I don't know.

Above the rear tires I believe.
Hard telling why someone drilled those holes.
Man you have 10 70 Chevelles in your salvage yard, you lucky dog you.
Steve Johnson Jun 27th, 07, 11:15 AM Yes Dean, this wrecking yard, All American Classics specializes in older cars. They have a website at allamericanclassics.com. There are tons of Chevy's. Unfortunately most are very rough and none have drive trains. Since I am redoing the trunk my next question is how to fix the holes, any advice would be appreciated.
smittyocat Jun 27th, 07, 1:17 PM I would remove all the paint around the hole on both sides and then plug weld and grind smooth. A piece of copper sheet or aluminum taped on the bottom side usually works for me to help when welding the holes up. I am sure other may chime in on this too.

Actually mounted on the top of the inner wheel wells. RPO V75. Have only seen one in the last 25 years.
Kind of curious what the other side of those nuts look like. Just a bolt head or is there straping too?
Steve Johnson Jun 28th, 07, 3:18 PM Greg here is another pic. Not sure if this is what you wanted to see. FYI there is a rubber washer between the bolt and the bracket.

70SS454 Jun 28th, 07, 5:42 PM If Chevy had installed that bracket it would have had a caged nut welded to the body and not a loose nut and bolt setup like you see. Installing something like this on the assembly line would have required TWO people, not profitable for Generous Motors!
floyd66 Jun 29th, 07, 12:02 AM You have a wrecking yard with ten 1970 Chevelles in it??? Lucky duck!
ss1970chev454 Jun 29th, 07, 11:37 AM interesting.
no clue...not even a guess.
