Will tall valve covers fit with a stock brake booster on a 70? I will be running a solid drivers side mount also so it shouldnt move much. I just installed roller rockers on my car and they are hitting the drippers in my vintage M/T valve covers and I dont want to cut them off.

The valve covers will fit under the booster, but removing them can be a real chore. On my friends 69 Chevelle we took a booster off like a Sunfire or Cavalier. Then we took the brackets off the old booster and put on the new booster. We had to fab up a push rod off the brake pedal its a little different.

Danny. Did you try the double gasket trick with your M/T's?
Which tall covers are you using.
I'm using these. click (http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_751360_-1_11355) part #555-50166. They clear rollers and Girdle, and have about an inch between them and my booster. Take quite a bit of fanageling to get the left one on but it does fit.

how hard would it be to take a valvecover(alum) and cut it the long way..
mill in a reciever groove for a o ring like gasket
then make a bolt system. to hold the two halfs together ..
then you can unbolt it. and take it off..
can't be that hard with the manufactured(build) valvecovers that outfits sell..

Guys switch to hydroboost. It is a very small compact unit, not bigger then the master cylinder and easily twice as powerful as that weak vacuum unit. It runs off the power steering pump, cheap to pick up at the wrecking yards and very very powerful

I am actually doing that. The short block is out for machining right now. While I am putting in a new motor, I am converting to hydroboost. I am having hoses made right now. Looking forward to all being done.

I didnt like my M/T covers, Im more into shiny stuff and I really dont want to double gasket them. The covers I have are some tall polished aluminum ones, no brand or part number on them so I dont know, I got them from a friend for $30 bucks with rubber gaskets and 2 moroso red breathers. They look exactly like these

But I hear good things about them, and they do take up less space.

well got any pics? Im running the original frame pads, solid drivers side mount and a rubber passengers side mount.... My header gets into the steering shaft since the engine sets so low. With my M/T covers I have about 1" to 1-1/4" of clearance between brake booster and cover top.

If you're referring to me, I don't have a picture of it in the car. The motor is back out of the car right now so I can finish up some of my bodywork stuff. When I had the motor in the car I didn't try to take off the valve cover but it looked like there was enough room to do it. The valve covers I used are tall, but not as tall as some others like the Edelbrock Elites. Here's a picture of the motor out of the car with the valve covers on it.

These valve covers only come with one hole in each cover so I had to drill out an extra hole in the passenger side valve cover for the oil fill plug.
They're really nice valve covers and only $85 at that.

I'll go out today and measure the booster, but I know it's definitely the stock booster that came with the car when it was new. How tall are the valve covers you're trying to use? Because I know some of the valve covers I tried, like the Edelbrock Elites, are so tall they don't even come close to fitting.

They are the same valve covers you have on that engine in the pic but I tried for about an hour to wiggle them on but the closest I got was about 2"s from the gasket to the head. Ill go take a pic tomorrow and post it up.

Hey bluechevelless, How close are those tall covers on the a/c box? Could you get that side off if you had too?

I just got done converting to manual disc yesterday.I wasnt having clearance problems with tall valve cover, but was having vacuum problems operating my booster. My car was manual drum and converted to manual disc. What an improvement.Still looks like its manual drum from the motor compartment, but the stopping is way more superior with the discs over drums.Go manual master cylinder, run any size cam you want, and be done with it.Im happy with this setup.Im using a 1968 camaro manual disc/rear drum master with a 1 inch bore, works excellent. No clutter in motor compartment,no worries of vacuum leaks from booster,no vacuum hose to booster, easier to maintain.

got plenty of room on that side to get it on and off, all I have to do is pull the breather off and then wiggle it between the vacuum ball and the rockers

Danny,
I haven't been able to measure the diameter of my booster because my car is just a large bulge under a mountain of snow right now, but it looks like the same as in your picture, (except mine is black). Are you using the tall solid motor mounts or the short ones? Because I am using a tall deck block, with poly mounts, have the motor lifted about 7/16", and have just about the same clearance or a little less on the drivers side as your picture.
Mike

P.S. What condition are your body mounts in? If they're crushed the clearance will be affected.

brand new rubber body mounts torqued to factory manual specs. The frame pads are the original big block units with the solid engine mount being the ones for them and a rubber on the other side. the solid engine mount is the same height as the original GM engine mounts I pulled off

Hey blue I seem to be having the same problem with my 69 chevelle.I have the moroso solid mounts and I think they may be taller than the stock im not sure.Does anybody know what would be a lower style of mount.Or basically what kind of mounts are you guys using..
