: Lessen Horsepower
Sk8Crash69 Feb 17th, 04, 1:13 PM Now this seem like and odd questions but I was wondering whata re some easy way to lessen horsepower. My situation is I am looking for and engine on ebay and I found one I like but it is 480 horsepower which is too much for me and my daily driver chevelle. it has a 750 holley acrb would putting a 650 lessen the HP? I know a diff cam would def. do the trick but i was satying away from any big dissambly of the engine. Any ideas would be helpful and hope i win this engine. Thanks Guys
Rad Racer Feb 17th, 04, 1:24 PM Don't cram your foot in it. When you want to go faster, stick it to the floor!
I built a 72 Nova for my girlfriend last summer. I had a 350 4 barrel so that is what it got. She constantly complained that it was too much power to drive. Now she realizes you can just not stick your foot in it.
But, I guess if you really want to limit the engines potential. Just use a tiny carb. Put a 600 Holley on it and wire the secondaries closed. That ought to slow her down.
If it's the roller cammed 383, then the answer is no. It's a pretty serious motor, that's going to need regular inspection, and I think you will find that his reserve price will be over 4K.
tony r Feb 17th, 04, 1:37 PM why pay all that cash for a monster rod motor just to lean it out and smoke a piston???? why not go to jegs or summit and get a 350 hp motor?? or if its a daily driver and ur thunking gas mileage why not just slightly beef a stock 350 at a local shop for around 2000$$ ????? if u run to small a carb on a built motor u can cause damage!!! the guys at the shop that built my 383 said not tu run anything less than a 750 cfm carb!!!
tony r Feb 17th, 04, 1:40 PM oh yeah i agree with tjc will not be less than 4 g`s for a 480 hp motor now way!!
tony r Feb 17th, 04, 1:44 PM i dont think i would evere buy a motor off of ebay to many scammers and croocks!!! theres a guy trying to pass a 71 malibu with a monte dash (woodgrain) off as a ls5 454 car with no motor and a 10 bolt open rear ??? what ever!! find a shop near u and talk to them besides what if u have a problem with the motor are they gonna back their work??? shipping costs if its junk??? etc.. graemlins/sad.gif
Wolfplace Feb 17th, 04, 8:32 PM Not to be too negative here,,, but with the majority of the "450-500HP" engine ads I have seen on ebay, you will probably not have too much of a problem with it having to much HP :D
Yours could be an exception as I haven't seen your particular one but my feeling is most are a little "generous" in the HP estimate department :D
Nickel333 Feb 17th, 04, 8:52 PM Im in absolute shock.......less power??? are you running a fever???....do you need to see a doctor???
427L88 Feb 17th, 04, 9:28 PM USe a Holley 2300 2-bbl on an adapter plate. It'll be fine and pull surprisingly well, but not WILD-ARSE as it would be with all of 750 cfm.
BTW, the 500 cfm 2 bbl only flows around 375 cfm as measured to the same standard as 4 bbls. I'd sure you could squeeze decent economy out of one, even set up for a hot motor. Accelerator pump shot will kill the milage, as the carb will be stock with a 50cc pump and cam. You might want to drop that in favor of a 30cc housing/arm/bushing to aid with milage. Stock jetting is #73s, which is good. With that strong of a signal, I think you'd want to set jetting rich. The stock 065 power valve is fine BUT if you go to the smaller 30cc pump, you may want to install a larger PV, like 095 or even 105.
Anyway, they up on the 'bay once in a bit. And having driven the 427 on the center 2 bbl only for a bit, I can honestly say that it runs darn good like that. reman 2300s can be had for $150 or less. I paid $130 a pop. Decent carb, right out of the box, for your 383 application. I get good open road milage on it as well. ( 15+)
Then you'd only have to change to a 4 bbl, and SHAZZAM!
I've taken folks for a ride in the old red car before and just given them a 2bbl-blast.
" Man, that pulls pretty good!" they'll say. Yeah, right, hang on, "FEEL THIS!", as you crack all six barrels. Very cool.
This presumes, of course, that they don't have an 11 second ride at home. Then the thing is just mediocre!
OK, short answer, Holley 2300 on an adapter plate. Less than $200 all in, and you can quickly bolt on a 4bbl.

pdq67 Feb 18th, 04, 8:15 PM 427L88,
Yes, I remember the old Stromberg leaker trips on my Buddy's '55 Ford H/T hopped up 292. It was bored .060" over and had H/C Jahns pistons in it and a set of Heddman Headers.
Nothing like your ride, but the trips still sounded about the same AND the kick in the a-- was great even for the old 292!!
BTW, why don't you just pull the cam for a milder one, (read, more streetable), and put a stock Q-Jet set-up on her?? Should do fine, imho!!

pdq67 Feb 18th, 04, 8:18 PM Back again, and my buddy Jerry's 250hp/348 with stock trips '58 2-Door, Biscayne did the same thing!!

m71 Feb 18th, 04, 10:27 PM why not just buy a GM Goodwrench 350? it will have a warranty too. i'd have trouble buying any used engine unless i personally knew the person and knew exactly 100% what was in it. you're just asking for trouble when buying something like that on ebay, IMO. if it were such a deal, then they wouldn't have any trouble selling it to someone in their own area. ebay is ok for some things, but not the purchase of something that expensive without having firsthand knowledge of the engine. .02
pegleg71 Feb 19th, 04, 1:37 AM I have to agree with woldplace on this one. If they don't have a dyno sheet and someway to prove that it's from that engine I wouldn't believe it. One of my buddies is running a "600hp" 454......yeah...it runs 14's with no traction issues. graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/sad.gif Makes you wonder no?
