: Shoot dang nab raised exhaust ports

Hello everyone...
I have BBC ready for action for my 68 chevelle. It has Brodix BB2's, so like a large majority of the aftermarket heads out there for BBC, they have raised exhaust ports. Also the heads have been milled for higher compression a bit. I have a set of Hooker Super comp headers with the part number for a 68 chevelle. These fit mint in my early 80's G-Body when the combo was in there.

I still have stock sbc lower motor ears and am using a solid moroso BBC upper mount. It looks like it is really close to the right height judging from the look on top and guaging the clearence between the oil pan and front crossmember. My boogle is that it seems that my header collectors are a good inch to an inch and a half into the floor panels (at least on the drivers side) they fit fine on the steering box and linkage clearence.

This said I have a few questions I'm hoping some people who have experienced some of these things can comment on. I don't mean to turn others away, but I have searched this forum for about 3 hours and some other boards trying to figure out this motor mount thing and I have heard it 10 different ways as correct. Both lowers are the same.... the lowers are different... ack. It is enough to make your head spin. I also have read on the header issue that there is no way to get headers to fit other then customs... but then some have said they have run Hooker super comps with no issue. I under stand that there is some differences between cars, but shessh.

I dunno what to do.... I hate to buy motor mounts or have to try and find BBC lower ears if they still aren't gonna work. I need to change to a bigger header primary anyways so different headers isn't a thing, but I hate to shell out 1200 for a custom set of headers if I don't have too. I'm getting really close to saying to heck with it and going to a plate mount setup. graemlins/clonk.gif

BTW for those interested, to see the motor mocked up (Have changed it up quite a bit since... good buy belt water pump, hello vac pump, new intake, carb, etc.) and dropped into place and a couple other pics look here: http://www.mnracing.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=783

Thanks in advance for any help. smile.gif

AFAIK, the BB and SB motor mount stands are about the same height, but the BB stands have extra bracing. I've seen several cases of guys trying to use shelf headers on a tall deck or raised port BB, it just doesn't work. However, if the ports are raised .600 and the headers need 1.5", something else may need straightened out. I don't think it's the frame stands, though. How much room do you have under the pan sides with the engine sitting on the mounts?

If I remember right somewhere between a 1/2" and 3/4" between the Moroso pan and the crossmember... nots ure what you mean by the pan sides... but maybe this pic will help give you an idea.

I have Hooker 2217s on my 70 GTO with a BB. I have Holley heads that have a .600 inch raised exhaust port. The headers fit pretty well. Ide be happy to take some pics if need be.

I ran into the same problem with my '64SS - I dropped in a 454 w/2" Hooker Super Comps using the small block frame stands and Moroso BB solid mounts. I couldn't bolt the collectors to the head pipes because they were against the floorpan! I swapped the BB mounts for my old SB solid mounts, and that lowered the motor enough to give me clearance. I later wacked the ears off one of the BB mounts and used it as a spacer between the motor and the frame stand to give a little extra room for the clutch linkage and steering linkage. Hope this helps!

Greg So is my only source for lower ears a junk yard or does someone produce them still?

Your next problem may be burning spark plug boots. I run Brodix BBC heads and after a hard run I used to smoke a boot or two on a regular basis. I went to Asbestos heat sleeves and have no more problems.
