Just received my replacement cam from Summit/ Comp Cams & noticied something kinda odd. First observation was that the grind # serial numbers were engraved by hand on the end of the cam, whereas the one that failed was done by a machine. the second thing I noticed was on the cam card just below the grind # it says

Special Instruction 1:
Special Instruction 2:

Do you suppose they cut replacement cams out of a different core or something?? What do you guys think?

Hand processed, ground like a custom cam except with a off-the-shelf pattern, probably Rockwell tested.

It's their way of making sure you get a part that's known to meet specs. If this one wipes you (and they) can be fairly sure it isn't the cam's fault.

Thats pretty much what I was thinking --or actually hoping... ;)

Don't mean to be a snit, but cam is one area I wouldn't cheap out in. It's the brains of the motor. You put some generic low-buck grind in there, you acheive generic performance. You wnat an upside surprise, like I did ( 118mph was a surprise) you get the correct grind.

As for the XE cams... read this post and LOOK at the graphs yourself

There is definatly something wrong with the cams other than the 250 and maybe the 262.

Though I bet cyl size/compression has some to do with the differences.

On a side note, my comp cam was not engraved at all. Bought from summit, came in a comp box it looks like they used a fine tip paint pen to label the grind on it.
