I am wanting to install a carb spacer on my car but do not have the clearence to do it the way it is setup. I have a 4 in K&N and I was wondering if I went too a 3 in with a 1 in spacer if it would make a difference. I assume the 3 in will still provide plenty of air I have a 383 with 400 hp. Also I was wondering about the extreme flow tops from K&N that have a filter in the top of the air cleaner. Are those any good?

The 3 +1 will be close in height to the 4 inch filter but may be slightly higher if you consider the 1/8 gasket on the top between the carb. You should be alright. I like the filter tops however i dont have $60 to throw away so i went for the cheap $15 edelbrock triangle top cleaner better hood clearance and better flow then a stock airbox with a reusable foam filter.
The filter top thing at leats looks cool but if it will be really close to the hood i dont hink you'll see much of an improvement.

Yes it works! I had to rejet my carb after adding the K&N open top! So, definitely more airflow.
Pic of the 69 Camaro ragtop with the 3" filter to go with.
