So, I ordered Carters 120gph 7.5-8psi strip fuel pump but am now wondering if I should have ordered their 120gph 6psi street pump instead for a ~450hp/500lb-ft motor(406)? This motor will see lots of autocross and road racing but will also see some street driving(8-10k/yr).
Which would have been the better choice? Also now that I have the 7.5-8psi pump do I just need to run a regulator for things to work right?

My opinion, you should run electric. I had a mechanical and know other people that had mechanical pumps that ended up putting electric
pumps on because of problems with failure and leaks.Recently installed an electric because
the pump rod wore out. Again it is just an opinion.

I have the Edelbrock 7.5 psi race pump and it works great. It's been on for over 5 years with no problem. I'm sure the carter is similar. I hate electric pumps for the street, only use on if you have too.

I have been running a $15 Carter fuel pump from Pep Boys on the 454 in my 70 for 4 years now, never had a problem with it. It delivers plenty of fuel to feed the 500 HP big block smile.gif .

I just got the carter street pump, I was torn between the strip pump with a regulator or the street pump...

Carter mechanical street pump feeds my 434 gas hog with a consistent 7psi. I think it was $24 and put my shiny-nifty-super-special edelbrock to shame....
