hi everyone. i'm kind of building a new motor for my '63 chevy p/u as teh conn. rod went through the oil pan on it's current 350. i've been given an all standard '68 camaro 327 short block that will be reused with new bearings/rings. this is what I want to do:
-Vortec 906 casting heads
-.019'' steel shim head gasket
-Edelbrock Performer RPM intake (vortec style)
-Lunati 301B3LUN cam
288 296 Adv. dur.
231 239 dur. @.050''
0.485 0.507 lift w/1.5 rocker
108 LSA 102 ICL
i figure with a .025'' Piston to deck height i will get 9.67:1 compression figuring in -4cc valve reliefs in the stock flat top 4 valve relief pistons. with the lunati cam i picked out, i should get about 7.62:1 DCR. I want to top it all off with a Holley 3310. any ideas on power? is it an alright combo? the truck has a TH350 with a mild converter(will be changed soon after the motor goes in when funds allow), and a 3.73 rear with 26'' tires. any ideas/tips would be awesome.
thanks,
chris

well thats not a lot different then the 327 i recently built for my 65 vette. I mean i used the edelbrock RPM cam, RPM heads, RPM manifold and a 750CFM carb. i have a 3.90 rear end and a tremec 5 speed. i think for a P/U it might be a little revvey.

im not too worried about the revvy part because the truck is going to be a hot street ride, it won't be used for typical truck duties. the truck only weighed in at just under 3500lbs with 3/4 tank of gas without me in it. with me add 165lbs.

I know the .015" Fel-Pro gasket will work with Vortec heads but I'm not sure about other shims. You might want to check on this. I know the .018" Fel-Pro is not recommended with Vortecs.

I'd go smaller on the cam, unless you plan on running a 3500 stall converter and more gear. IMO, that cam will be a dud below the 3000-6500 range.

Try something like the Comp 270H maybe?

i won't use comp cams. had too many problems with them, expensive problems. i want a cam that will bring my DCR low enough to run on 91 octane that we have here in california. mabey UDHarold will chime in on a different grind from Lunati.

i'd also like to know what a good rpm limit would be for the motor so i don't kill my rotating assembly.
thanks,
chris

You can run 91 at 8.2 DCR. Although 8.0 would be safer.
