Does the Pertronix conversion kit require a resistance wire or a ballast resistor? Or does it use straight 12 volts?
My 72 Chevelle (350) has an HEI distributor installed with the factory resistance wire removed. The voltage regulator is by-passed, and it has an internnally regulated alternator.
There is no room between the distributor and fire wall. I don't want to modify the firewall, and I' fear the distributor could hit the firewall under heavy acceleration The plug wires are touching the firewall. I want to go back to the point-style distributor and use a Pertronix kit.

This is puzzling. I have a '72 with a 350 and HEI and there is reasonable clearance. I wonder if you have some odd motor mounts causing this condition.

http://www.pertronix.com/downloads/ignitor12vneg.pdf according to this the ignitor requires 12v to work properly.

I installed one of conversion kits in my 69 El Camino about five years ago and it uses 12 volts, no resistor wire or ballast is needed.

Thanks for the help. I 've seen some 72 Chevelles with clearance, others, like mine, with no clearance. I just don't want to beat the fire wall in, or damage an HEI. I think the pertronix is my best plan. Thanks again for the help.
