A friend of mine just bought a new solid lifter lunati cam and lifters and a set of afr heads for his 1964 nova (383). he will be replacing a set of iron 2.02 heads and a solid lifter cam of unknown specs. I can get the specs after the cam is out. I could probably buy these heads and cam for pretty cheap. I have ridden in his car a few times and it runs pretty quick. It also has a pretty radical idle for a 383. Their are no problems with these parts. He just wants more power and wants to know what he has in the car. My question is can I reuse these parts if they are kept in order as they are pulled out or is this a bad idea. If I can reuse do I still have to break in the cam or will it be okay since the parts have already been used together. I know these heads won't fit on a 307. I was think along the lines of at least a 350 or a 383.

Sure, if you put the lifters in order so they go back on the same lobes!

Take a short piece of 2x4 and drill it and make a lifter nest for them in order of how they came out.

But I do have to say, I coffee-canned the solid lifters I ran on the little old, -097 solid cam I got out of a junk motor and it ran fine!

I figure I got lucky is all and the old -097 is a small cam to boot.

I've done it a couple times with no problems. Like PDQ said, just keep 'em in order.

PS. This is probably not necessary, but I always coat a used cam with break in lube and run it for 20 minutes at 2000-3000 RPM just like a brand new cam.

I don't like using used lifters in a different block. The cam is not problem but the lifter bores could be in a different location in a different block. I would use new lifters on the old cam and do a full break in.

Lifters are cheap. The best insurance is to do as Pat Kelly says and use new lifters, and break them in......
