ok heres what i got. vin # 138176A107266

this on cowl tag;

first line) 11A ( im taking this as jan 11th as production date? )

line 2) ok next line is where i get lost i understand the 66 -13817 ATL, that im clear on however after that i have a number 1346. ?? according to decoding tag article it should read the vehicle tracking number of 107266 correct? was this on all tags? however 1346 doesnt match my vin? what can this be?

line 3) i have F-F for marina blue top/bottom paint

line 4) trim section 732-A which is bright blue interier buckets right?

line 5) now we get to options im alil confused here as well. i have W 2LR and then directly below that the letter L. ( im taking this for option class 2, L for 4speed tranny and the R for rear speakers. next the L under is that for ralley wheels? )

i hope this wasnt confusing if need be i can prob post a picture. thnx

11A is the 11th month 1st week (ist week of Nov 1965). miss informed on the 1346, this is not sequence #. 732 A is Bright blue with bench (731 or 731B would be bucket seats). W on the W 2LR is tinted front windshield only, 2L is a 4 speed no console which is consistant with the bench seat , the R is for rear speaker. Never heard that the 66 chevelle had an option for rally rims.

As Jim noted, 11A is month/week or November, 1st week of 1965.

Body number of 1346 has nothing to do with the VIN. Body numbers were assigned by Fisher Body long before the Chevrolet-supplied VIN was determined. However, body numbers to 'appear' to be sequential for the plant, year, and series type. Meaning the 1346 is seuential to the 13817 series from Atlanta. I have a couple of 66 13817 Atlanta tags from 11C with body numbers of 1777 and 1786 respectively. Curious as to what decoding article you read. Every book I've read, and most Internet sites, have this information wrong.

F-F is Marina Blue top and bottom, correct.

732-A is bench seat, not buckets. Code 731 (with or without -B) is corresponding medium blue bucket seats. The 'A' and 'B' are redundant in early models as the same color seats have different codes for bucket and bench and often even different codes for the same color and type seat between the Malibu/SS396 and El Camino.

Correct on the 2LR (and W is group 1 for tinted windshield [only]) being group 2 with the 4-speed (L) and rear seat speaker (R) but the last 'L' I don't believe is for ralley wheels as (1) they weren't offered on 66 Chevelles and (2) see below.

I have 17 1966 Atlanta tags and 7 of them through at least 03B (March, 2nd week) have the letter 'L' - sometimes by itself and sometimes following a group 5 option. These include Malibu sport coupes, SS396 sport coupes and even a Malibu 4-door sedan. The next 10 tags I have from 04A (April, 1st week) through 2nd week of July (07B) DO NOT have this letter 'L'; most are SS396 sport coupes, a few Malibu sport coupes, and even a 300 2-dr sedan. So, it appears that some time between 03B and 04A the 'L' was dropped from the tag for whatever reason and its meaning is unknown.

i got the info here in decoding cowltags. not sure if im reading it right:

De-Coding Cowl Tags

US and Canadian Cowl Tags vary slightly, but they are both located on the firewall just above the windshield wiper motor, these are held in place by special open holed rivets.

1. This is the date code for when the vehicle was built. The day of the year.
2. This is in a lower location on Canadian Cars.
3. The model year of the car, (1967 in this example).
4. This is the division series, and decodes the same as for the VIN.
5. Location 4 is for the body style and again this decodes the same as for the VIN.
6. This is the manufacturing plant where your Chevelle was built.
Here is the unit number for your car, this is how the factory tracked it through production.
7. The trim number for your interior.
8. The seat type installed.
9. Body Colour, lower first and then upper.
10. Installed Options, (usually only on Canadian models) these are decoded under the Option List.
1966

if you look at #6 and refer it to the picture ( not sure why that would copy and paste ) it shows the sequence number has the number it traced it through production.

also under trim it shows after bench seat that an A code refers to buckets. i think im reading that wrong though.

so anyway the main question is why does my car have bucket seats and a console then? it appears to be org. this is the first frame off. if he added this does this hurt the value of my car?

also then what in the world is the number 1346 mean? its directly after ST 66-13817 ATL 1346 there are several spaces after ATL though its closer to where BODY is at. in fact its right in front of where it reads BODY. next line if all the way at right F-F PAINT directly under where it reads 1346.

the L is all the way laft hand corner under W 2LR. i just read in option class 3 it showed rally wheels under 66 on this site as rally wheels. check it out maybe im just reading this all wrong. its confusing for a first timer.

Can't find where you got the info here, maybe you could supply a link?

1. This is the date code for when the vehicle was built. The day of the year.
For Canada, yes. For U.S. built Chevelles only the month and week are specified. Example Canada may have 1-1-17 for January 17th where the U.S. would have 01C.

2. This is in a lower location on Canadian Cars.
3. The model year of the car, (1967 in this example).
4. This is the division series, and decodes the same as for the VIN.
5. Location 4 is for the body style and again this decodes the same as for the VIN.

Physically compare this 67 Oshawa tag with this 67 Atlanta tag and see how this description fits.

http://www.chevellestuff.com/67velle/tags/atl/tt_atl_12b_13817_ff.jpg
1. Body dates aren't formatted the same (1-5-30 vs. 12B)
2. Canadian date is not lower.
3. Model year does not appear on Oshawa tag.
4. The Division and Series DOES NOT necessarily match the VIN - at least on U.S. built Chevelles. A good example on this page http://www.chevellestuff.com/67velle/67_trim_tags-atl1.htm of a 67 300 Deluxe 2-dr sedan with body plate showing division/style of 13411 and VIN showing 13311. Have numberous other examples of this on my site.
5. See #4.

6. This is the manufacturing plant where your Chevelle was built.
Here is the unit number for your car, this is how the factory tracked it through production.
7. The trim number for your interior.
8. The seat type installed.

The 'seat type' of bench or bucket is not called out with -A or -B on all U.S. plants for 67. Baltimore, Fremont, and Oshawa didn't do this. Why Atlanta, KC, and Fremont did is unknown but seats in the same material were coded with different numbers for bench and bucket; no real need for -A or -B.

9. Body Colour, lower first and then upper.
10. Installed Options, (usually only on Canadian models) these are decoded under the Option List.
1966

Oshawa does list some RPO codes like D55 for console where Atlanta, Framingham, and KC lists the console under a group option; group 2 and letter code G. Baltimore and Fremont didn't put this info on the body plate.

It's very simple to add bucket seats and a console. Hurt value? Probably not since most people probably prefer buckets and console and even top show judging like AACA don't make any distinction.

Answered above, it's the Fisher Body unit number.

the L is all the way laft hand corner under W 2LR. i just read in option class 3 it showed rally wheels under 66 on this site as rally wheels. check it out maybe im just reading this all wrong. its confusing for a first timer.I read that too but no rally's in 66. That page also says code "E" in group 5 is for tinted glass but it's in group 1, not 5.
