I have a 1972 402 block casting number 3999290 with date of F 12 72 that was assembed 06 22 (June 22). The application code is CTB which comes back as a Chevelle, Camaro or Monte Carlo. The partial VIN is 12J2984-- ( I can't quite make out the last two digits, it needs to be cleaned up better). Anyway I found that the J code in the VIN is for Janesville, WI but I can't find any of the Chevelles, Camaros or Montes built there that year. Any ideas what this block is out of? Hopefully a Chevelle. Thanks.

Its from a full size car, never any Camaro or Chevelle built at Janesville, Wis Assembly. Today they build HD trucks as well as Tahoe, Suburban and GMC namesakes.

The Vin derivative for a car is 12Jxxxxxx and for a truck C2Jxxxxxx.

So its not the original engine

Any ideas why Chevrolet would use that CTB code in so many different vehicles, Chevelle, Camaro, full size? What would the partial VIN look like for a 72 Chevelle? Thanks.

since it's the same engine, why not? GM wasn't thinking that these cars were going to be as collectable as they are.

Thanks. The VIN derivative would look much the same as what's there except the "J" (Janesville, WI) plant letter would be "R" for Arlington, "B" for Baltimore, "K" for Kansas City, "L" for Van Nuys, or "1" for Oshawa - PLUS the sequence number for '72 Chevelles at all plants began with 500,001. It's basically the same LS3 engine regardless of what it was installed in. No reason it being installed in a Chevelle would make it special; it still isn't the original engine for your car anyway. :(
