Ok guys I need help.... I have had a startng issue with my 68 chevelle over the last month. Too make a long story short I got stranded TWICE in the stagging lanes, once when I was going rounds,,, arg arg :( :( :(

Car will start fine, runs strong and then after I turn the car off, the car likes to act up on me and produces this sound, turn Volume up....
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/0ef6b7e9-44d6-4403-9769-9951013a8c13.htm

This happens sometimes when the car is not started for 24 hours, sometimes it happens like I stated above, in the staging lanes, after a nice cruize, ect.....

All I have to do is jump the car and it starts right up everytime... I do not even have to have the other vehicle running to jump the chevelle just hook up the cables, and it turns over great. Car will usually start at least two or three times after I jump it, but then same old problem, DINK DINK DINK.......

Things I have done:
1. Brand new Red top Optima, Costco replaced it, no questions asked.
2. Brand new positive and negative cables, clean surfaces, good connections, both cables use a bolt and srew into the battery..
3. Voltage is around 14.4 at the battery, when the car is running
4. Volts at battery are 12.62
5. Alt is grounded, engine is grounded

Starter is a DB Electrical mini, less than a year old.

Only draw I can think off is the digital clock in the aftermarket radio, but with a brand new battery, I think it should of started..

I am at a total lost, any help is greatly appreciate, sorry for the length of the post.....

Have you tried jumping the starter? It is usually poor current flow to the "S" terminal. As a test, run a extra wire (10g) from the starter "S" terminal to somewhere close to the battery with a 30 amp inline fuse close to the battery. (if you want to get fancy, you can add a starter button) When it won't crank use that wire (to battery pos) to try cranking the car. If it still won't crank, its a starter problem, if it will crank with the wire but not with the key, then you have a wiring problem. Be careful as the wire bypasses all safety devices. Post back after testing.

Greg by "S" terminal are you referring to the small terminal the iginition wire goes to?? Might sound stupid, but will a hand held bump starter accomplish what you are talking about? Thanks Brian...

Yes

Yes, just make sure you have good connections.

my 68 was acting up like that too. the clicking nois is hard to tell for sure if it is electrical or metal on metal contact. my problem was that the starter was not engaging and was hitting the flywheel. crawl under the car to see if that is happening. it may need a shim...

Ok guys pretty sure I found the problem. The little red wire that goes to the small post on the starter had been burned ever so slightly by my header. The wire was exposed and I had bare copper touching the header. Fixed the wire and no issues yet (fingers crossed).......
