: opinions on an et prediction?

if the weather holds out for this weekend i'm going to take my 71 Chevelle to the track and get a few runs in on it. can't believe it's November 3rd and it was almost 80 degrees here in southern IN. smile.gif
here's my combo: 1971 Chevelle 3700lbs with driver. 406ci sbc, SRP flat tops w/2 valve reliefs, 64cc Dart Pro 1 215's, 2.05/1.60's, CC XE284, 1.6 roller rockers, RPM air gap intake, 3310 holley, 1 3/4" Hooker S/C's, 2 1/2" exhaust with Flow Tech Terminators, th350 with 10" 3200 Coan conv, 12 bolt w/ posi and 4.10 gears. stock HEI distributor.
this what i have for now, at least until after XMAS. ;)
i plan on upgrading the ignition to an MSD pro billet dist and coil with a 6AL box, and upping the exhaust to a Torque Tech 3" with Dynomax Ultraflos or 40 series Flowmasters. i do plan on upgrading the carb, but not sure of which one i'm going to get. i'd love to have either a 750hp or a 950hp but they are just so expensive! if i don't go that route i'll probably look for a good used 750-800dp. i have my eye on one now, but i haven't convinced the fella to sell it to me yet. graemlins/sad.gif thanks for any input.

12.50-12.70 no H pipe or x pipe in the exhaust?? I think the exhaust is too small.

I can't really give a prediction without knowing the type of tire you are going to use.

I will add that the MSD parts and the 6AL will not help your ET at all. keep your GM HEI and put the money towards the carb. I had no change in ET or MPH between a box stock 850 DP and a 950HP, but the HP was crisper on the street and more adjustable with the air bleeds.

Bob, I agree an X or H pipe may help and definetly worth the effort (I should talk I have been putting mine on for 3 years) graemlins/clonk.gif But, I would say the 2 1/2" system would be good as long as it is mandrel bent. Using a 3" from the header to the muffler and 2 1/2 tails seems to work for many too.

tires will be 28x9 M/T slicks. i have SSM lift bars, CE drag shocks and moroso trick springs, so i know it'll hook. it went 1.50's 60ft times with my 454. don't expect this motor to be able to do that well. i'm hoping for some mid 1.60's. the exhaust is not mandrel bent, it is almost straight back. no tail pipes. although an x or h pipe might help it, i'm not going to waste money on it when i'm upgrading to 3" in the spring anyway. even with mandrel bends and an h pipe i stil think 2 1/2" is marginal at best for this motor. especially if i upgrade the cam to a roller design later on. i can't afford to buy same type parts more than once, so i have to think ahead. i'm just using the exhaust i had on it when i had the 355 in it last year, as well as the carb. i would've reused the 1 5/8" headers except they wouldn't work with the angle plug heads, so i had to master card the new headers. smile.gif although the msd may or may not make more power, the tunability has to be better than my 1975 HEI that's about shot and i can get a killer deal on the msd set up as my buddy just upgraded his and this stuff is virtually like new, and i'll be in it for about $150-$200 for the whole set up. now, care to make a prediction?

I have a friend with a very similar combo (except that its in a 3300lb 69 camaro), cutting mid 1.6 short times and running 7.7 1/8, 12.0's....so I would predict 8.0 1/8 and 12.5 1/4 times.

I too can't wait for this weekend....import vs domestic at MIR in Maryland. I plan on adding 2 more lbs of boost (25-35hp) and trying out a 950HP carb.

Good luck.

from driving it on the street i know that it is not a mid 7 sec 1/8mi performer. i just hope it gets a 7.9x with what i have for now. it doesn't feel very fast to me at all, but this car never has felt fast to me, even when it ran 7.20's with the 454 it seemed slow at the track with slicks on it. hopefully i'll get to find out Sunday. thanks for the input fellas!
