Hi,
My Daughter has a 2002 LS Impala. The airbag light comes on frequently and then goes off. I did hook up my Auto XRay 5000 and no trouble codes or pending codes. Been doing this for a month or so. Just wondered if anyone has any ideas? My rookie guess would be a ground or sensor problem?
Just don't want her spending a fortune at the local repair shop.
Thanks,
John

John..I am not familiar with the xray 5000 scanner.Does it allow you to scan SIR in Body?If not..your SIR code is there to be read with the appropriate scan tool.Post the SIR DTC when you get it for more assistance.

I believe there was a TSB put out by GM on this. (Technical Service Bulletin) dealing with a connector that would go intermittent. Since an airbag is not something you want to play with I would search the internet for applicable TSB's and then have your daughter go to a Chevrolet dealership to correct the issue.

Airbag dummy lights are like ABS dummy lights, if it's on, you're not safe.

I haven't had the time to play with the AutoXray 5000 other than basic trouble codes. I wouldn't mess with the airbag stuff. She took it to a local repair shop today and they said it was the airbag sensor. Wish she would have taken it to a Chevrolet dealer. My initial scan said no existing or pending codes. I did not get into the history area. Sounds like $250-$300 parts and labor. Will find out Wednesday when she gets the car back.
Thanks,
John

After loking at the troubleshooting section in the GM repair manual, it looks like you will need to take it to a dealer. They'll have to hook up a Tech 2 scan tool and see if the module is communicating with the BCM. Any dealer that wants to charge more than about .3 hours to do this is ripping you off. This will at least get you some info to check out. Just have them do the SIR diagnostic check, and see if the SDM is communicating with the BCM. If it is, then there should be stored codes. If your light has been flashing occasionally, and there are no codes, it could possibly be a bad SDM. Let us know if there's a code in it.

Looks like you posted while I was looking at the manual. Did they say specifically which sensor it is? There is only one front end sensor. They are simple to change. The troubleshooting chart for that sensor says to check the connector for corrosion. The sensor is right next to the bracket for the hood latch, on the front face of the core support. You will have to take the 3 push-in rivets out of the upper baffle to get to it. 250 sounds too high for that. Let me know exactly what sensor they said was bad, and I'll see what I can get you one for. I work at a Chevy dealership.
