Unwrapped the elect tape off my harness to route them better and check out the lumps. Seems the shop just retaped over splices just twisted together. Some might know I've had a bad experience with "restoration" shop and am trying to finish myself. I am using the waterproof shrink wrap connectors. I have the voltage reg/horn relay/headlights/starter hooked up. Have some unanswered questions? 74 model 454 in a 67 model car. Long pump with external reg alternator.
1) Big harness at drivers front fender splits and goes to alternator and then also to horns/headlights/relay/battery. Alternator wires are a big red, small yellow and a small green. The plug on the alt has a blue and a black.
Does it matter which I hook the yellow or the green to? I also have a hot and a ground wire run to the alt from the battery posts. Also necessary?
2) Also on harness at driver fender are two violet wires that run to a spade. Is this for the parking light/blinker?
3) Light blue small wire by itself. Know where it goes?
4) Two separate green wires. Horns? I have new horns and gotta figure out how to hook them up.
5) Right side (passenger).
Purple and a d. blue small wire. Parking light?
Harness at the Firewall next.
6) Left side, looking at it, bulkhead connector has a branch off right at the firewall with a wire about two foot long with a boot plug in?
7) Now main harness branches off towards the starter. It Y's to the motors on the firewall. Small black and a small green wire going nowhere?
8) Follow towards the back of the engine down by the transmission. Two 14 ga. yellow wires not far apart. Where do they go?
9) Won't get into the underdash now but how can you tell which bulb goes where? Bought new ones but none are hooked up. Only gauge working is the oil pressure.
Sorry for so many questions and hope noone gets ill about it. I know I could get schematics but don't know how to read them. I can follow instructions though. Thought I'd perk the experts on here with a pop quiz. Thanks so much. Joining this site was invaluable.

Ok. Learned a few things.
1) If I have the two small wires switched to the alt then the car will keep running when I turn it off. Don't think I need the hot and ground wire from the battery posts. These were hooked up by the "shop" to get the engine cranked.
6) Oil pressure dummy light. I have factory guages now so I will tape it up.
9) Colors are marked on underside of dash same as wires for the bulbs.
Still working on the other stuff.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Gotta get to work under the dash next. Rewrapped the harness with cold shrink non sticky tape and routed where everything is pretty much hidden. Looks great.

Wow. 68 reads and no replies? Doesn't anyone have an answer to any of these questions? I am surprised. Surely someone can look at their wiring harness and match a color for me. I would appreciate it.
Or, maybe, all harnesses have been butchered over the years. LOL

From memory:
1 Yes it matters which way the 2 wires connect to the alternator. One is field current and the other is for the idiot light I think.
4. Green wires are for the horns
6. The wire with the boot probably goes to the switch terminal on the brake distribution block.

1) Big harness at drivers front fender splits and goes to alternator and then also to horns/headlights/relay/battery. Factory wiring should be like this
http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/medium/Original_Chevy_system.jpg

Alternator wires are a big red, small yellow and a small green. Whats the yellow and green for?

The plug on the alt has a blue and a black.
Should be blue and white.

Does it matter which I hook the yellow or the green to? I also have a hot and a ground wire run to the alt from the battery posts. Also necessaryYellow and green don't sound like factory wires, probably not needed. No ground or hot wire from battery is needed either with external reg alternator. There should be only one big red (10g) on the alt output post.

2) Also on harness at driver fender are two violet wires that run to a spade. Is this for the parking light/blinker?Are you sure they are both violet, trace wires farther back to verify colors.

3) Light blue small wire by itself. Know where it goes?Could be oil pressure, would need to know exact location to be sure.

4) Two separate green wires. Horns? I have new horns and gotta figure out how to hook them up.
Do they come from the horn relay?

Harness at the Firewall next.
6) Left side, looking at it, bulkhead connector has a branch off right at the firewall with a wire about two foot long with a boot plug in?
Wire size and color? If light brown, probably goes to brake distribution block.

Would really need better descriptions or pics (pics are worth a 1000 words) to answer the other questions, as I don't like giving out incorrect answers.
