: 69 Trim Package?

I have seen some chevelles with the chrome trim that follows the bottom portion of the car, but a lot that don't have that trim. Does anyone know if that trim package only comes in the Malibu model or also the SS?

If I am understanding your question correctly, that would be Malibu trim.

Garry has pretty well summed it up. Here's some adidtional specifics:

300 Deluxe - no rocker moldings and no wheelwell moldings.
Malibu - had rocker moldings and no wheelwell moldings.
SS (Malibu & 300 Deluxe) - no rocker molding and had wheelwell moldings.
COPO - no rocker molding and had wheelwell moldings.

NOTE - there is at least one documented COPO that did in fact have the rocker moldings. This particular car sold at BJ auction either this year or last.

Hope this helps.

I stand corrected regarding the 300 Deluxe "non SS" trim. They did have a narrow side molding very low on the rocker between the wheelwells, while the Malibu molding was much higher and ran the full length of the car.

Thanks to my TC buddy "von" for pointing that out.

Don,
are you sure about this? My 69 Malibu has wheel moldings along with rocker moldings? I'm almost postive this is the way it came from the factory. The reason I say I'm almost postive, I have always know this car, and the old guy I bought it from swears that this is the way it came from the factory. I've seen pics of the car the day he bought it too. I have no reason not to believe this guy when he has pictures to boot.
Its a 69 Malibu 350/TH350, with a bolted rag joint also.
I'm just asking what you think?

Interesting Mike. Over the years here on TC there has been the odd posting like yours about a 69 Malibu with wheelwell moldings. There could have been a few factory installed pieces for whatever reason. There obviously could have been some installed by dealers as well, whether before sale or at a purchaser's request. Certainly not the norm, but definitely possible.

In looking through the 69 Sales Brochure one more time I notice the "Concours" models did get the wheelwell moldings and the lower body moldings.

So, who knows. Always keep an open mind to this stuff.

While awaiting Don's reply I thought I'd go ahead and add my .02 worth. The only '69 Malibu non-SS (or COPO) to NORMALLY get wheel well moldings was the Concours 4 dr hardtop Sport Sedan. The Concours was a trim option on the Malibu 4 dr Sport Sedan. Malibu 2 dr hardtops didn't get wheel well moldings as a rule BUT mistakes were made and other weird things happened on the assembly lines back then. So although possible it's more likely if it's a 2 dr hdtop that the dealer or someone else added them after delivery.

I like the way the '69 Malibu looks with the silver paint under the trim.
I don't see many restored Malibus with the silver paint but was looking at a unrestored blue Malibu with the silver and thought it looked very good.

For what it is worth, the 69 Malibu lower trim length allows for wheel well mouldings on all 4 wheels. It seems to me that it was intended to be at least optional to install the wheel well mouldings.

Got news for you fellas, Wheel Well Opening Mouldings were available for pretty much everything. I've got part numbers for virtually all models.

When I bought my 69 Malibu new, I could have had the dealer install any option I wanted and they would install those options in the shop. For example, mine did not have power steering, but they would have added it as I got a quote for it.

I think something as wheel moldings would be apiece of cake for a dealer to install. By the way, my Malibu had no wheel well mouldings; but as stated before came with the silver argent stripe from the front fenders to the rear. A side molding piece ran along the entire length of the car.

When I bought my car, it was sitting next to an SS exactly the same color. As far as I was concerned, the SS looked like a stripped down piece of crap because it was missing all the trim. Go figure 38 years later everyone thinks the SS trim is better, but not me. The silver sides with the white pinstripes sets off the 69 body style so much better than a "Plain Jane" SS.

I try to. I am always willing to listen and try to learn. I am waiting the day the pevious owner finds the orginal paper work like he says but I am not holding my breathe. I did see pictures like I said, but I don't know if a dealer installed these things or the owner did (which he says he didn't, the car has under 12,000 miles). I want to take the guy at his word, but I am sure at his age like many other people, including myself, forget things over time. I just wish I had the original paper work to confirm for sure. There are not many options on this car, so I AM THINKING maybe the old guy is telling the truth, why would someone install wheel moldings on a car like this, with so few other options?
I don't know and I thought I would ask, thank you and to the others who responded, I hope I didn't hijack this thread.
thanks

Picture of a Malibu I bought new. Taken in summer of 1969. No wheel well trim. (Disregard the SS in the grill. ;))
