: Winter projects anyone?
10sec69 Nov 15th, 04, 2:35 PM It seems to be about that time of year... Soooo, what kind of winter projects does everyone have planned?
I've been putting off upgrading my 12 bolt for too long now so that's first on the list. I've also been saying for years that I was going to do a mini-tub so this seems like a good time. Going to shorten the housing about 3" per side, notch the frame, move the lower shock brackets inboard a little, and replace (or modify) the stock tubs.
Mr. UPS man has already dropped off my new housing ends and shiny new Pro Star wheels - 15x5 front, 15x10 (3.5" B.S.) rear. Picked up a pair of 29x15.5 MT Sportsmans (thanks Scott!) which will fit up in there nice. Still have to order bearings and axles though. This will be fun. Time to get cutting!
10secBu Nov 15th, 04, 2:48 PM Sounds like your gonna have a sweet ride when you squeeze those tires in.
I've got a new project starting and all I'll say right now is that the lil rat is coming out in the next couple days...gonna be a long winter.
RedSS454 Nov 15th, 04, 3:04 PM It was going to be front suspension and new brakes and calipers, but now that I went and blew my tranny, I think that is going to come first.
Chris
airrj Nov 15th, 04, 3:14 PM It is going to be ambitious, but I am starting to design my 3-link suspension. If I can get some good time in my buddies shop, I think I can get this and the Ford 9-inch in. If I get that done or not I plan to get my adaptors done and my Z06 rims on the car.
Sounds like you have a cool project starting. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
godsend Nov 15th, 04, 3:34 PM Rebuilding my engine with JE 8,76 piston, custom roller, vortech supercharger. EFI twin MSD dis4 drivers. 8 coils etc.
Will change springs/shocks for Koni double adjustable.
New 17"/33"/15" slicks.
Will be a nice winter and a awesome summer ;)
soccerguy045 Nov 15th, 04, 3:42 PM Hopefully starting a 454 rebuild and 12-bolt rebuild is what's on my list. If things get going I hope to have my engine assembled by Christmas Break.
West72Chevelle Nov 15th, 04, 4:05 PM I'm gonna pull the mill, clean the frame and firewall up, rebuild the front suspension, and paint everything up real nice. I've gotta do a little headwork and put some rockers on my 355 and button it all back up for springtime. If I've got time, I gotta start on the bodywork.
1966_L78 Nov 15th, 04, 4:25 PM Finishing assembly and detailing of my other Big Block motor... maybe drop it in the chassis for a test firing...
Home (garage) electrical work (more lights in the garage, etc... New closet organizer for the wife (keep her happy so I can buy more stuff for the Chevelle)...
Like to do a cam swap on the convertible, but thats down the list a bit...
Purs Nov 15th, 04, 5:12 PM I've got a 4 bolt block and some SWEET '781's that I could build my 496 with.... but my aunt may finally be ready to let go of my deceased uncle's '87 GN... the only problem is I'd have to let go of my '68..... :( I hate these kinds of decisions.... Oh well, either way I have a nice car, right?
Pony Hunter Nov 15th, 04, 5:58 PM My machinist is going to be done with the 468 I was asking all those questions about a few months ago. I ended up with JE pistons, 7/16 rods, and a cast crank I shaved a pound off of. Got some 781 heads I put in big valves, cleaned up the ports and chambers on. Solid roller 502A2LUN cam and Isky lifters 'n springs. I scored a TH400, steel driveline and crossmember this summer also. Swapping out a 327 for this and putting it in a RX7(Project RX327). I have a '79 Triumph Bonneville T140 and a stretch frame to put together. I'm going to be having fun this winter.
d1_bradley Nov 15th, 04, 6:27 PM Replacing my 20 year old 327 in my Street Rod with a LS-1 and 6-spd. Probably more than just a "winter" project though. 'Cause of course this leads to rewire and reposition seat and column change and well, I've been thinking of a color change..... never ends.......at least the battery won't need to change.
Nickel333 Nov 15th, 04, 6:50 PM -Pull Motor/tranny out of the Nova, clean up engine bay a bit, i have a new, much more suited, cam picked thats going in, out thats going to get me closer to my low 11 goal.
-All new interior, carpet, headliner, aftermarket seats, 5 point harness and possibly fabricate a console.
-If i have enough time i might sand the car down and put her in Grey Primer. The paint looks like hell up close, enough to where primer would probably be better and i dont have the $$$ to get her professionally painted. It came with a couple spots of primer, then i got hit last october, and she didnt have insurance!!!! Stupid bitch!! So i had to fix it and it dosent match worth a darn, and the fiberglass hood that come with it dosent match real well either. Plus ill probably have a piece sectioned in a quarter panel so that wont match either. The car got a new quarter panel a LONG time ago and since there were no 73 panels out, he just put on a 72!!! so i have a secion to fix that. Its looing like a long winter of work. BUT ittl all be worth it next summer right??? Or am i throwing countless hours and dollars at a fast hunk of tin??? AHHH its only money.... you cant take it with you.
blaauboer Nov 15th, 04, 7:34 PM Paint for mine......same color .....gotta fix the quarter anyway ...so we are gonna do the whole thing.....I will post pics as the progress begins....should be next month.....The guy thats doing it for me is very good and very tuff to get in....I set this up during the summer and I'm glad I did.....He is also very close to my house so I can bug him atleast a few times a week...
Jim....If you have any questions or need anything let me know....good luck and I know it will look great......
daveseitz Nov 15th, 04, 11:01 PM Just ordered a whole bunch of parts wife doesn't know about. :D Now as soon as I get the sling off my arm maybe hit the car.
SILVERSS454 Nov 15th, 04, 11:18 PM Rebuild front end of SS468 Clone.
Drop 468 roller motor into SS Clone.
Find and build a 12 bolt for SS468 Clone.
Body and paint for SS468 Clone.
Get second job to pay for SS468 Clone!
BLT4FN Nov 16th, 04, 12:47 AM the goals are to:
Rebuild motor after snaping a double roller chain in half.
then rebuild a 200r4(never rebuilt a tranny before) will then switch it with the 350 turbo.
and finally change the gears in the back end to match everything up.
Hoping all this will get me solid 12:50 and 15 -16 mpg.
Hope the funds will allow all this to happen.
Oh yes also put my new headliner in.
WestyJ69chevelle Nov 16th, 04, 6:03 AM finish my interior, port and polish my Perf RPM heads, peck away at the little things to really make her purdy...
MY FYN 79 Nov 16th, 04, 6:05 AM Finally get my new 383 together.
SS_Sean Nov 16th, 04, 11:31 AM I'm continuing with the work on my 1978 Malibu. I've got the frame shave completed and painted. The new Ferd 9" is in, with new upper and lower arms, springs, and QA-1 shocks. I'm having a ten point roll cage welded up, starting in December. As soon as I get it back from the fab shop I'll start in on the body work, paint and interior. Also, my 454 should be completed by December, but that's going to wait until next year for install...
Need to get my motor back together. Last run this fall the hex-adjust timing set let go and needless to say it caused a mess. Bent all but 4 valves, aluminum thruout motor. Worst part is that it broke one of the rocker studs out of the head!! I spent 60 hrs+ porting and improving the heads so I really don't want to give up on them. My builder thinks he can install a longer stud w/o getting into the water jacket and weld the stud boss back on the head. This wasn't a planned project!!!
The planned project are: QAL 1 shocks all around. Wolfe rear antisway bar. Plot my suspension ( IC, Anti squat, C.G. etc.) so I know where Im at. Send converter back to Munzinger to possibly tighten it up a bit to lower upper RPM going thru the lights. Smaller front tires to help w/ the reaction time.Maybe go to a Digital 6 box to simplify things and get rid of my AL6 w/ add-ons along w/ a new MSD locked distributer. My old Mallory unit seems to be pretty worn.
Figure out a really cool X-mas present for my understanding wife!!!!!
It's a long winter up here!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1967chevelless396 Nov 16th, 04, 8:13 PM Early phase of a mild street, 510 BBC stroker motor which will eventually replace the existing 396.
Shooting for 500HP and 600TQ on 91 octane! :D :D
66 283 Nov 16th, 04, 8:47 PM More inches, more nitrous = more power, bit bigger tarz, less weight, 25.5 SFI legal. (I bought a welder)
No ET Target yet but I want to go 175mph on 93 octane at 3500lbs.
Bob West Nov 16th, 04, 8:59 PM It became official today, a pump gas 505 w/a 6000 rpm redline(self imposed redline) and it will be done Dec.15th, he went BACK thru the 781's,installed 2.25 intake valves, forged crank, eagle rods,JE pistons, max compression will be 11-1 with the comp billet solid roller which had already been purchased a long time ago...all I want is a 10.99 timeslip...IF I can hook it up.
66BBCONV Nov 16th, 04, 9:10 PM Will be installing a Vintage Air AC unit with new AC dash.
Installing a quick ratio steering box.
Installing front dic brakes, so I won't be crapping my pants so often.
If time permits a Tremec TKO 600.
Bill
rthlc Nov 17th, 04, 11:44 AM I've decided it is time to make my car a lot more road friendly so this winters project is to convert my 67 from old school street machine to something more resembling "amateur touring"
Changes on tap are:
Swap the milled 390 heads for some reworked 781's (2.19/ 1.88 valves w/ minor unshrouding and bowl cleanup) dropping static compression from 12:1 down to 9.5 or 10:1 - swap the fairly stout Lunati solid for a Crane Hyd. 292-2h, (214/230 @ 050, .540/.527 lift 114 LSA). I'm going with one of my old intake/carb setups (Edelbrock Performer 2.0 w/ Holley 3310 w/ 150 plate NO2), swapping my worn TH400 for a prepped 700r4 w/2000 stall and changing out the rear 4.10's for 3.30 gears.
Also on for this winter is installing the new upholstery along with the vintage air and custom autosounds stereo systems I picked up last winter.
I also need to swap my front springs again this year. The new ones I put in last spring are fine for straight lines but way too light for cornering. I swapped to power front discs last spring but I have since picked up a 8" dual diaphram booster setup I will be putting in this year. The rest of the suspension was updated last year (poly busings installed all the way around along with 1 3/8" front and 1" rear sway bars, new rear springs and Edelbrock boxed rear control arms).
CaptCrunch Nov 18th, 04, 1:55 AM Well after having some family matters take over life this year I am back to finishing up my 68 BBC drag car. I also am in the process of building a twin turbo small block for a daily driver... but still looking for a rust free 70-73 camaro or ?? for it.
1) I have a 454 4-bolt block coming out of the machine shop this week, so I plan on pulling out the tired .125 over 427 from the engine bay and building a .030 over 454.
2) Install a 5 speed
GRN69CHV Nov 18th, 04, 5:45 AM Currently building a new GenVI 454 motor. 9.5/1 CR, Merlin Heads, Hyd Roller. Plan on installing it with a tight 12" 2000 stall converter and dropping back to 3.31's. Car is well under way for new paint also. Vinyl top has been removed and DA sanding has begun [car was actually stripped and prepped several years ago, but had a custom metalflake paintjob applied before I got it]. Plan is a stock '69 color, may or may not leave it the stock light green, but it will be a correct '69 color.
Tom's 68 Nov 18th, 04, 6:58 AM repairing a couple of small holes in the floor of the 68
sandblasting the bottom side and painting both sides of floor
and finally set the 69 down on the new frame after the 68 is back together
ImpBiscuit Nov 18th, 04, 2:32 PM Starting on my 71 Malibu. I have just about got all the parts to build the engine. It will be a .03over 454 with KB pistons, xe268 cam,781 heads. I have not made up my mind to go with a th400 or a 700r4. I scored a $200.00 "P.O.S" parts Elcamino with disk brakes and a 12bolt. I will eather go with 3.55 or 3.73's. The body is not that bad. It does need a right 1/4 panel. I am building for a driver. I hope to start in December.
Trying build somthing the wife can drive and haul my two boy to school in every now and then. She said she would rather have a jag with a V8. I said not this husband.
They are getting to soft in the Denali. My boys need to catch the car bug. I had a clean 70 Elcamino for them to start on in a few years.
dbreese Nov 18th, 04, 5:23 PM New fuel pump, box in rear lower control arms add new bushings to upper and lower rear arms. Install Moser axles w 1/2" studs. Install performance rear end cover.
