i'm going to be starting the assembly of my 71 in about a month and i'm planning on new wiring. i have looked at the painless kit and some of the others from opg. which is the easiest and which gives me the most options for adding things.
thanks a lot for any help.

to add to your confusion, there's also a company called American AutoWire that makes good stuff too. They probably have what you need already done up.

Even more confusion:confused: There is a company called M&H Auto Wire that makes replacement wireing harnesses for most cars. I used them on my 67 and was tickled with the ease of installation and that the wires were labeled and correct color for all the items.:hurray:
IMO the painless kit might be good for full custom cars and is a somewhat generic kit, but why bother when stock-type repro harneses are available from M&H and AW. In this case the Painless kit would be a pain, as a fellow Chevelle guy I know found out. I used M&H and it was a matter of unplugging the old and plugging in the new. Stock appearing and factory type connections.

M&H is local to me .... I can just drive over :D
price's are good .. I've never had a problem !!
they will customize it for special use's ...
I really can't think of anything else that they could do to make it any easier

i was just looking at the m&h catalog and unless i was reading it incorrectly, it looks like it will cost well over $1000 to get a complete wiring kit for my car. does that sound right? i haven't looked into this that much but that seems like a lot for this.

Thats about right, give or take if you are replacing everything. Do you have the old harnesses? What condition are they in? Are you doing any converting (like to factory gauges, ect...?) If you go with americanauto wire or M&H, it will be all plug and play, no cutting/splicing required. If you go with a universal harness, it takes a lot of custom wiring to get everything working. One of the hardest for the novice is the turn signals/tail lights as they are interconnected through the turn signal switch in steering column.

A Buddy And I Just Rewired A 66 Step Side And Used The Kit From American Autowire. I Really Liked It And I'm Planning On Using Their Kit When It Is Time To Wire My 71.
