: Single Plane Tuning
kjett Nov 29th, 03, 6:01 PM I recently swapped my performer RPM intake for a Vic Jr. With the old intake I had ~5" of manifold vacuum. With the Vic Jr. I'm seeing 11" of manifold vacuum. I was running a .5" open spacer on the performer and I'm running a 1" open spacer on the Vic Jr. I guess I was expecting that the signal to the carb would be weaker with the new intake  At any rate, I suppose I'll have to change my f/r power valves. I had 3.5 in there with the old setup, I'll probably go to 6.5 or higher with the new setup. Throttle response seems real good so far. I'll get a chance to test the new setup out next weekend at a bracket race in Alabama.
blaauboer Nov 29th, 03, 6:16 PM I will be waiting to see what happens.......Thanks for sharing......
Bob West Nov 29th, 03, 6:16 PM Is the stronger signal because the carburetor is seeing all 8 cylinders with the single plane vs. the dual plane, 4 on this side,4 on that side?
I know the H.P.Books"how to hotrod big block Chevys" has a section about stagger jetting a single plane on a big block.
mc71454 Nov 29th, 03, 6:22 PM Ken,
I didn't get a real big difference between the RPM and the vic jr. when I did the swap on my old combination. I didn't even note it. I would think the dual plane would have more vacuum.
Also, how is the weather in Atlanta all year round? What would be a nice suburb to live in? I am looking around for a nicer weather place to be, not serious yet, just curious.
Bob West Nov 29th, 03, 6:24 PM You don't want to be in Atlanta when it snows Tom, those folks don't have a clue, kinda like Dallas and Houston too.
Mike Feudo Nov 29th, 03, 6:25 PM Something was very wrong with your dual plane set up. You will not pick up manifold vacuum going to a single plane. I wouldn't worry about the power valves normally you will need to play with the acc. circuit and the jetting.
kjett Nov 29th, 03, 8:13 PM Robert,
I'm not sure??? I can't explain it. I would have thought it would have went the other way....
Tom,
Atlanta's not too bad. It's very crowded and the traffic bites, but what big city doesn't have that problem? I live north of the city about 45 minutes in Alpharetta. This seems to be the area where most of the growth is occurring. If I had to drive in the traffic everday I'm not sure what I would do. For example, last week it was raining lightly one morning. I left the house at 7:00AM and arrived at work at 8:10. Guess what? My office is 15 miles from my house :( Luckily I'm able ot telecommute a couple days a week with my work, otherwise....

I can't wait to see how it performs when there's nothing "wrong with it."
DEEBOO Nov 29th, 03, 11:49 PM Move to Augusta, Ga you will not have that problem graemlins/hurray.gif
cody Nov 29th, 03, 11:54 PM OOhh, can't wait to see the results! Hope you get better results! I have a feeling You might pick us some MPH, but it might take some more tuning obviously. How does your car hook right now? what rpm was it going through the traps, and what rpm did it drop to after shifting? Good Luck! Are you going to the track soon?
bowtie455 Nov 29th, 03, 11:57 PM hey mc71454,why don't y'all come on down to alabama? next week's temps will be in the mid-60's!shoot-dang!i won't hafta wear my shoes!oh heck,we southern boys don't wear 'em anyway! :D

Most folks living here probably can't even remember the last ime it snowed enough to stick in Houston. The last substantial snow I remember was about 1973.
Winter is a great time to be here, it's our summer temperatures you want to avoid. They usually start in late March and end around Halloween.
blaauboer Nov 30th, 03, 9:22 AM Tom......Move to Texas......Seems like everyone I know that has ever moved there loves it and is still there.......Plus there are tons of car guy's there...... graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Bob West Nov 30th, 03, 9:24 AM Hey Rod, I was down there 6-7 years ago when they had a pretty good ice storm,in fact it almost went as far south as McAllen. I got into town early to unload at a W.W.Grainger store, and I'm glad I did, it looked like they were playing bumber cars down there. If I ever left Missouri,I'd go to Texas.

There's a bracket race at Montgomery Motorsports Park next Saturday and Sunday:

Try and make it over if you can. What's going on over at Steele? Any races coming up or are they done for the year?
Thanks.
