Working on a 68 chevelle ss 396 and cannot get the valve's set wright,i have changed lifter's. I was just wondering if the stud's could be flexing or the valve springs are weak. The cam is not stock,I do not know the lift of the cam.The car has set alot over the past few years would this couse the spring's to be weak.I have also added roller rocker w/polly lock's.

How are you setting the valves? What do you mean you can't get them right. The lash doesn't have so much to do with the valve springs. If your springs are weak you'll just float the valves sooner (right?).

Hydraulic or solid?

Use the EO/IC method to set the lash. When the Exhaust valve for #1 opens, set the intake valve. When the Intake valve closes on #1, set the exhaust valve. Easiest to do all intake or all exhaust first following the firing order (makes for less engine rotation).

Tighten the rocker down until the pushrod just touches both the plunger and the rocker. Make sure you take the socket off when checking, it's easy to push the socket down too far and have a false sense of "Zero lash". Then tighten 1/2 Turn.

I've never EVER had a problem doing it this way using the EO/IC method.

If you still have a problem, give me all another 1/4 turn and see if that makes a difference, otherwise you've got another problem.

I once thought a lifter collapsed and it turned out to be an exhaust leak! graemlins/clonk.gif
