I am trying to replace the starter drive on a 1967 396 starter. How do I remove the retaining ring to make the change? Thanks.

I use a small snap-ring pliers once the retainer pieces are out of the way.

I've seen the ring peeled out with a tiny screwdriver, too.

Thanks. I found out on another forum that you can remove it by using a 1/2" socket and drive back the collar. At that point you can remove the split ring.
