On my 72 Chevelle the license plate light doesn't work. I've tried 2 different bulbs in there and I've checked it with a test light and there is power there, just no light. Any suggestions?

Are you sure you are using the correct bulb? Part#'s ? Did you put the socket back in the housing?

if there's power there, then the only thing it could be is something with the actual light socket connector,...look it over more closely, make sure its holding the bulb correctly to make the proper contacts, clean of course

I put the same part# back in that I pulled out but I'm not sure it is the right bulb. I have had it in and out of the housing and I'm just lot having any luck.

It is holding the bulb good. The contacts look clean but old. I have not had a meter on it yet but the test light is real dim when I tested it.I would guess around 9 volts or less. Should there be a full 12 volts there?

Thats your problem there, if a test light is dim, the bulb will be dimmer or out. Test the hot lead to a good (bare metal) ground, if voltage is good, its a ground problem, if voltage is low, its a power problem, try checking trunk connector.

As always with electrical gremlins, check/clean all grounds.
