Hey everyone I have about 1,000 miles on my new ultradyne cam hyd roller. I have been to the track a couple of times and not really had any problems. I adjusted the valve using the eoic method. Well on the way home from the track a couple weeks ago and this is not driving fast I had already done about 5 runs and am now half way home on a 20 mile drive I started getting some ticking so I parked the car for a week because I did not want to find any bad new that day. I started it up a week later and took it around the block once it warms up it start to chater again so once again I used the eoic method to adjust the valves I spin the pushrod till it just takes out the play then a 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Still seems like they are all making a hell of allot of racket adjusted them again still the same. I have had a couple people who know a hell of a lot more than I do that I just need new roller lifters they have about 11,000 mile on them with plenty of racing also. They are not anti pump up, should I look for those. Also there was no damaged roller rockers or push rods up till the 1,000 miles it was fine. Hell it still hauls ass with the noise, but I know it has not been there before so I am not going to drive it till this figured out. I will have other quesions later but I need to fix it for now my new cam definately made a big difference but not as much as harold originally thought it might (go into that later cam is definately sweet though) thank you in advance

jacy im thinking that you may have a header leak they will sound just like lifter noise .get yourself a piece of garder or heater hose and try to pin point the noise with the hose up to your ear and finding it with the other end [poor mans stethiscope

thanks for the reply Unless it got allot worse out of no were I already have a header leak which I can hear when I first start it up then when it warms up all the other raket starts and I have tall valve covers and when I rev the engine while in the compartment I can hear them rattling away in there. When I take the covers off to adjust them they still click and clack but it is quieter because they are not echoing in the valve covers, but it would not hurt to check it out again with the good old long small hose trick.
thanks for the reply

A couple of things come to mind , assuming it is the valvetrain. Are you useing alum or iron heads ?
" Some " alum heads can expand more than others and it may require more than 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Crane has suggested a couple times in their newsletters that Hyd Rollers really need a full turn... Also if you dont already have them and are running stock type rockers then a good set of Poly Locks would likely be of a bennifit.

what type of lifters are you running ? did you notice any unsual wear on any of the push rods ? or in the push rod seat on your rockers ? are the rockers alum or steel. do you have stud girdles? and yes some roller lifters do need a whole turn to keep hushed . there could be many simple reasons for this chatter ..

Are you sure your rockers aren't hitting the valve covers? Look on the inside for witness marks. If you're running high ratio rockers you may also have pushrods rubbing on the head.

I have tall valve covers I know they are not hitting, I am using hydraulic rollers from speed pro, I have roller rockers I think they are steel they feel to heavy for aluminum and I have poly locks when I first tried adjusting I had them set at 7/8 of a turn and had no problems for quite a while then on the way back from the track they started clacking. Adjusted to .75 turn and no difference I guess I will try a full turn and see what happens. No wear on the pushrod or the seats in the rockers everything looks good but sounds scary. I want to get this fixed so I can break something eisier to diagnose.
Thanks guys
by the way this is a 396 big block the cam makes power to 6500 but I have only gone there once and it did not seem to go any faster so I keep it at 6000 or lower when racing.

This is a good idea. I had this problem and trust me it has nothing to do with the heighth of the valve covers. The problem would be on the inside wall (nearest the carb) of the valvecover.

take each push rod one at a time and roll it on glass or as close to a completly flatt surface as you can get maybe lay down a mirrior to roll them across. check them all . is your problem just a couple of lifters clattering? maybe if so pull the rollers and shine a light onto the lobe to check for unnormal wear.. do you have girdles.?

what oil pressure do you have and are you running any kind of oil retrictor in the oil galleys?

i have another question. are your lifters connected to eachother bar a horizontial bar ? or do they have a small plate that sits over them with a retainer that bolts in the center of the lifter valley to hold them all in place.?
