Hi guys,

I buffed out the 75 malibu got the AC working and now a new problem. Took it to work the other day and when turned the ignition switch to the spring loaded start position nothing happened, the car had juice still, but no starting.

Did it for 3 times and then worked fine. So now lately has not done it that bad, but you can tell there can be little slight delay from when you turn the key til you hear it cranking.

I took the starter out tonight. I was going to put a new solnoid while out, was hoping to find a loose connection but dont think I saw one. Can you tell me where the two wires go (red and black) that head up the back of the block, the other I assume is a hot from the bat. The two smaller wires head through a metal tube. I can see that the red one has a white plastic collar around it as it enters the tube, what is that?

Am I on the right track, wont hurt to put the new solnoid now that it is out. Is there other testing that I should be doing cause to look the wires and connections looked fine.

After this should I run it, or could it be the ignition switch, I certainly have never done one of those. Oh no. Please give me advice.

A bad solenoid can cause symptoms like that, but I've found more commonly that these kind of problems are in the starter itself. A sticky Bendix will to that, worn brushes will do it, and any partially broken wires inside the starter can do it too.
Usually when I have intermittent problems like this, I first put the cheap $15 rebuild kit into the starter. If that doesn't solve the problem, then replace the solenoid which costs more.

I kinda suspect the ole ignition switch on the lower column. With a volt meter, see if you have current on the 'S terminal when you turn the key to start.

I dont know where the S terminal is. Can I see this switch under the dash?

The S terminal is on the starter, the one closest to the engine and unless you know where the switch is exactly, you probably won't see it
