: 72 Chevelle temp guage problem

Does anyone know what range of ohm readings that a temp sending unit should be allowing from cold to hot? When I run the car the guage pegs high, with or without the wire hooked up. (Sounds like it could be a guage problem).

Any known tests to see if the guage is ok? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Woj.

OEM SS-type gauge or aftermarket?

This is a factory installed guage dash. The temp guage was not in the car when I bought it, I have since re-installed it in the dash. This guage had a shunt/resistor? across the two horizontal posts. I installed the guage, then the shunt followed by the printed circuit material. I am assuming that is the correct order?

Thanks.

Can't gaurantee the accuracy but this is what I have found bench testing several temp gauges.
50 ohm = 250 deg
77 ohm = 210 deg
270 ohm = 100 deg.

The resistor needs to be installed on the vertical posts. The bottom post grounds to the gauge back.

Agreed. Also, Mine has to have the nuts holding the gauge on, then another set holding the resistor on. When all held with one set, it registered pegged.

Thanks for the information I will give this a try tomorrow.

Well,

I've reconfigured the guage with Bryan's help and I still peg out the temp guage when the ignition is turned on. I have 12 volts going to the driver's side terminal of the temp guage and good continuity from the opposite terminal to the temp sending unit. I also have good continuity through the temp sender. Resistance varies accordingly when the car is heated up, near the values stated by Elree Colby.

A friend of mine suggested that I connect a temp guage from a 69 guage cluster that I have and so I did that. It also pegs out full hot.

If anyone has the resistance values that I should find across the two terminals of the temp guage and across the resistor, that would be a help as well. I did mount the resistor vertically with the bottom grounded to the guage mount with a nut.

I've run out of ideas at this point. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

PS. I just went out and measured the resistance between the vertical posts with the resistor, 89 ohms, and from horizontal terminal to terminal, 50 ohms. That also matches the values on my 69 chevelle temp guage.

Problem solved. Thanks to those of you that helped me with this. The last issue that prevented the guage from working was a bad ground to the guage housing. That is fixed and it now works just fine.

Thanks again.

Glad we could help. I just chased a tach issue around until I realized it was just not tightened enough to make contact to the board. Sometimes it's that easy.
