: Opinions/Comments On My Motor Idea?
stingray454 Apr 8th, 04, 11:10 PM My 468 big block is currently torn down and here is the planned setup for this racing season.
454 +.060" (468ci)
12.5:1 Compression
Forged Pistons, 4340 Forged Rods, Cast LS4 Crank
2 Bolt Block w/ Main Studs
Pro Topline 320cc Aluminum R-Port Heads (2.25/1.88 Valves)
Comp Cams Pro Magnum Roller Rockers
Comp Cams 306S Solid Flat Tappet (.629/.629, 110LSA)
Dart Intake & 1050 Holley Dominator
Aluminum Flywheel
I have already purchased the heads, I went with the 320cc heads thinking that if I ever step up to a larger motor I can always have them ported later (that and I purchased them complete, shipped to my door for $1500). I also went with a solid flat tappet because I can't afford a solid roller setup yet and I really like solid flat tappet cams. I plan on driving this thing on the street and at the track. Plan on shifting at 6500-6700RPMs. Motor will go along with my Super T10 4 speed and 4.11 rear end & 10" slicks.
Any comments/opinions are appreciated. Also what type of times would you guess from this sort of setup. Desktop Dyno 2000 says 700 horsepower....I think 650 horsepower is a pretty conservative estimate.
mr 4 speed Apr 8th, 04, 11:14 PM ..that cam is a terror..the idle sounds like you're shaking a can of bolts violently :D
What are your ET goals ?
UDHarold Apr 8th, 04, 11:24 PM StingRay454,
If I may be so bold, I would suggest you consider the Lunati 402A8LUN. It is 292/301 at .020, 259/267 at .050, 170/176 at .200(your chosen CC 306S is 166 at .200), Valve lift is .625"/.625", and 110 LSA. I put them in 104° to 106° ATDC ICL. It will need a good fuel system, as it makes more power than the 306S.
It will also go 100,000 miles on the street if you want it to.
It has a very good idle sound, with a 'Crackle' to the exhaust.....

I'm currently running the 294S and wish I had gone with the 306S. My other setup with "206" Oval Ports (2.19/1.88 Valves), 294S Cam, 9.8:1 Compression, Strip Dominator Intake, 850 DP went a best of 12.1 @ 118MPH with a miserable 1.8 60' time.
With this motor I would like to crack off low 11s....do you think it is do-able?
Harold:
How much more power will the 401C3LUN cam make than the 306S? What is it's cost in comparison to the 306S (I'm a broke college student). I'd like to discuss this cam with you more if at all possible. Thanks.
UDHarold Apr 9th, 04, 3:06 AM stingray 454,
I don't know the CC cost, but the Lunati 402A8LUN is about $165.44, plus lifters. It is a 'hand-made' cam as oppossed to the 294S/306S group, which are ground on automatic cam grinding machinery.
Horsepower? No comparision---the 292 is both torqui-er and a lot stronger on the bottom,
That's it for me tonight,
I'll see everyone tomorrow.

GRN69CHV Apr 9th, 04, 8:44 AM Personal oppinion here. I think a 2 bolt block with a cast crank at 6700 rpm in a 12.5/1 454 motor, stock length rods with a clutch will not be reliable. In a 396/427, you can run a cast crank that high, but the thrust loads are not as severe as the 454. If it were me, I would be looking into 4 bolt billet caps, steel crank and 7/16" rods.
Motor Martyr Apr 9th, 04, 9:50 AM I think a cast crank with 12.5:1 is asking for trouble....especially on something that will hopefully hook hard!
Harold Sutton Apr 9th, 04, 9:50 AM Stingray454, Don't worry about the cast crank, all the NHRA Super Stock cars are running the cast cranks because they're 4 pounds lighter but the standard rods won't like 6700 RPM for long. Your also going to have problems with the weak Corvette rear end at the power level your going too. If you get good rods the rest should be O.K.
Motor Martyr Apr 9th, 04, 10:51 AM I think a cast crank with 12.5:1 is asking for trouble....especially on something that will hopefully hook hard!
stingray454 Apr 9th, 04, 12:36 PM I'm not really worried about the 2 bolt main caps and cast crank deal. I've already had the motor to 7000RPMs before and it regularly saw 6500RPM shift points at the track. The rods are 4340 H-Beams w/ 7/16" rod bolts, they hold up just fine.
I'm also not worried about the independant rear suspension of the Corvette. I baby the car out of the hole (my best 60' with slicks has been 1.8, it will hook harder but I don't feel like grenading the rear end)
427L88 Apr 9th, 04, 7:29 PM StingRay, you can cut some corners, but IMHO, one corner NOT to cut is the cam. Oh, and you will not be able torun your 12.5 on the street with eithwe cam on fuel avaiable from a gas pump. Only the ZL1 cam can tame 12.5 to run on 93 octane. That's something a poor college student should consider $3.50- 4.00/gal is steep. Get to 10.25-10.5:1 and chose a smaller cam IMHO. Ensure your DCR is 8.25-8.5:1 That's 93/94 octane.
One of the few Comps that looks good to me ( along with the new XS line) is their 280S. 10:1 and that cam should be nice.
