: Chrystal Ball prognostications re: Frank and Ben
kettbo Jun 7th, 07, 2:32 AM Gents,
Anybody care to guess some numbers on Frank or Ben's upcoming performance at Monroe? I'm really not into the 1/8 mile thing so I'm thinking 1/4 mi times and mph please. All I know is they are ahead of me in the process.....hurray for them:hurray:
I'm really undecided....will Frank's mean combo overpower his tires? Or will he master the track and lay down some huge numbers,,,,,,?????
Will Ben's TH400 give the gentle launch and not spin the meats? I'm really curious what mph this 454HO will deliver.
Dunno which car will be quicker but thinking the quickest run will be equal to 13.4 at 105. Plenty of potential for greater performance. If my Elky ever runs that good, I'd be happy!
Spoke to ART at the Schuck's warehouse in Lakewood today. He's pretty convinced a certain Welfare Nova could see some improvement by going to a Glide. He picked up 3 mph by changing from a th400 to a th350 and a pal picked up 3 more mph by going from th350 to build Glide....gotta be a light car...who has one of those?
I was looking at squirters and acc pump cams while visiting Art. Saving some cash for the safety stuff and passenger inner fender so the btty tray is not flopping all over the place. I'm reasonably confident the tech people would not approve of the board and bunji in there now.
RAMBO Jun 7th, 07, 3:11 AM LOL... George if you ain't stirrin the pot- you just ain't havin no fun are ya, boy?
Without drawing any lines in the sand- I'll say it will be interesting to see how we do- I think frank is pushing about 50-75 more HP than me (or at least has a lot louder mufflers)- we both have the same rear gears....
But I think the Automatic vs 4spd launching and shifting will be the deciding factor... We'll both have to pussy foot it off the line... Now Frank, are you running drag radials? i think i remember you talking about them. If so- I think frank may hand me my ass- but then again... should be interesting to see what happens. As long as my wheels don't come off, i'm a happy camper.
:)
kettbo Jun 7th, 07, 3:32 AM Ben,
No intent to stir the pot Ben!:D
No slurs, jibes, etc.
Just time to start a new thread.....
Frank has more power, don't think it is the mufflers at all. More power AND 4-speed on a slick track, should be interesting. You have the automatic....less difficult to launch. 1/8 mile, very unforgiving. I'd like to be there.....
Both of your cars have a lotta power.
I know there are 12s out there.....just not available on early outings hence my modest prediction. Tuning, tires, air pressure, chassis set, etc... LOADER1 didn't start out running 12s. Just tuning and fiddling, I saw FRYNTRNS drop a few tenths last summer.
gotago Jun 7th, 07, 3:54 AM After my dismal runs last week I ain't even gonna get in this one!! I was thinking of going back up to at least get some more time at the tree this weekend but there is also a show at Baxters in Tacoma on the 9th. With out sticky tires I ain't going nowhere fast especially with a 4 speed. Maybe someone will have a pair of used stickys at the show........
You guys going to Monroe be sure and take some pics:) Have fun and don't break nothin'
FRYNTYR Jun 7th, 07, 5:02 AM SO I'll go out on a limb and make a few Friday predictions without seeing either car run.
Franks has Stickies and some power to boot. I expect him to get down to and run bracket 5 (7.0-7.49) once a few runs get under his belt and worse case should be the bracket 4 (7.5-7.99).
Ben, your traction will hinder you and with a few ponies shy of Frank I would put you in Bracket 4(7.5-7.99) after tuning and getting used to the lights. you'll need some traction to get in the 7's though. I would not be surprised to see majority of runs in the low 8's but it should be capable of mid to high 7's at monroe.
Good luck fellas.
Both should run 12's in the 1/4.
Ben's 12:80'sto 13.0's with traction enhanced treads on the back and tuning
Franks 12.40's-12.60's if you can get her off the line clean.
flink69SS Jun 7th, 07, 11:05 AM Darryl- I think you're pretty close with a mid 7's run. If Ben get's a good launch, I expect him to make me work for it...:D
Ben- I am running MT Sportsman radials.
I am not sure if Ben has ever raced before but I am still a virgin and I'll probably blow it all on my first launch...
Hopefully I hit a lot of red lights on the way to the track so I can practice getting off the line quickly.
66 Buick Special Jun 7th, 07, 11:55 AM It won't work on the way to the track but remember leave on the last yellow. It feels weird but if you see it light up go!!! Don't wait for green.
FRYNTYR Jun 7th, 07, 2:16 PM It won't work on the way to the track but remember leave on the last yellow. It feels weird but if you see it light up go!!! Don't wait for green.
Like Greg said,,,,Leave on the last yellow. By the time your body reacts then the car reacts the light will be green. It's a timing thing. You need a few runs to judge when you need to hit it on the last Yellow to cut you best light.
If you wait until the green to hit it,,, you snoozed.
RAMBO Jun 7th, 07, 3:41 PM ...I am not sure if Ben has ever raced before but I am still a virgin and I'll probably blow it all on my first launch...
Just remember that you have to stage, then prestage when lining up.
Once you're "staged" the lights come on fast if you aren't expecting it...
So you creep up to the line- break the light beam for the pre-stage- wait a bit- if you want to pre-load your suspension do it in pre-stage- then slowly creep the last foot into the "staged" beam and then HOLD & watch the tree.
Remember- once both cars are staged, the lights will start coming down almost immediatly- So take your time in "prestaged" - DON"T just roll into the staged beam until you are ready to rock.
I went racing with a friend about 4 years ago, and he had never raced before- I tried to explain the tree and staging to him, thought he had it- but when we lined up- he rolled right through pre-staged and staged, and redlighted before the tree even started coming down! Dumbass! Lol!
Cool thing about monroe- is it seems to go pretty quick- maybe 15-20 mins or less between runs- so we should both get a bunch of runs in, so even if you goof the first one or two, you'll get it down!
BTW: I'm pretty far from a pro, but I have raced at pacific a handful of times with my old slow 69 & 70 350 powered elkys- so this will be a first for me running a car with any sort of real power.
FRYNTYR Jun 7th, 07, 3:47 PM Great Ben,,,,,,,you'll have it right away. I better drop my guesstimate for your 1/8 mile time.
The thing I love about monroe is how many times you can run.....basically I could easily get 6-7 runs in before elim's.
Ben, take Frank over to the tree to watch the first couple people run so he knows the lights and what they do. That'll help a bunch.
FRYNTYR Jun 7th, 07, 3:56 PM CORVETTE RALLYE WHEELS W SLICKS - $300
Here's a some 15X8 ralleys with slicks in Bremeton. Slicks may be no good?? But if a guy could get just the 15X* for a decent price and they are actually slicks, not circle track tires, It may be some cheap traction for a while even if worn,,,if they aren't to the wires, there's some low buck use left. Guy can keep the 14X6's
I'd offer him $150 for the 15x8's with the slicks, basically the price for the rims and the tired slicks are a free bonus.

dreis454 Jun 7th, 07, 4:05 PM don't be nervous....
you've made full or almost full passes on the street right?
less to be nervous about at the drags,
1. it's legal(no tickets)
2. no one to pull out in front of you
3. you'll know what she'll do now
just pay attention to the starter, he will tell you when to heat your tires & help you line up @ the line.
remember to leave on the last yellow light & you'll look like you know what your doing.
after you cross the finish line.....let the engine slow you downwhile in gear
before laying into the brake pedal.
kettbo Jun 7th, 07, 11:03 PM Hmmmmmm, I gotta re-think things.
Just left my pal's house, left two 14-16' tire tracks in front of his house.
Nothing big and smokey, just nice tire tracks....
I was not on it hard and this is only a 350....I'm gonna have to get busy before I drop the (future) Charity Rat into the Elky....
New Rear spgs
rt rr airbag
box the lowers for sure....
debating a COA on the uppers....(Course of Action for you civilians out there)
and naturally
purchase of some sort of race-oriented rubber.
My 255/60 TAs took a whuppin.....
Then gotta get the new frt spgs and figure out WTF with my suspension.
flink69SS Jun 8th, 07, 1:40 AM UPDATE....I just got back from doing a crap load of practice launches...:D :D :D and I'm still smiling.
Here's how it went:
1st launch- Too slow on the clutch and it stunk.
2nd launch- Too fast on the clutch and left a great set of posi marks down the road
3rd-10th launches- Each got better. I am still spinning the tires quite a bit but it's either that or a booooggg. Even though I am spinning that thing gets moving quick. My first good one cracked my buddies back in several places when that thing hit second gear and another time I hit second so hard it threw his hat off and landed on the back seat.
Everything ran great and nothing broke, overheated of threw any belts so I happy...:hurray:
Darryl- pm me your cell and we'll meet up with you at Frontier Village afterward for a cold one...:beers:
RAMBO Jun 8th, 07, 1:53 AM Well, i'll throw in my last second bits too...
came home- pulled out my "Other" carb, took it apart, cleaned it & blew it out. Put it all back the way it was when i got it and tried it out.
Off idle problems are gone, although I am having an idle consitancy problem (its either too high or too low- doesn't seem to want to idle where its comfortable) - its a bat outta hell... easy 25 more HP.... Motor actually SOUNDS different at WOT... more growl.
I drove it by mike's house (66chevellefan) and picked up a spare helmet- and he helped me with a little more tuning work (didn't help though, still wants to die idling in gear, i'll have to bump it up and just deal with it)
Anyway- I don't think i'll be running this carb normally as it stinks to high hell after being driven, but it sure runs sweet....
See you tomorrow Frank! I'm hoping to be there right about 5:45/6
Frank, Ben, what are You guy's running for rear suspension?
RAMBO Jun 8th, 07, 2:07 AM Mine is bone stock & original, my upper housing bushings are pretty much shot and in think are causing me some wheel hop.
Re-doing rear uppers and lowers will be my next project this summer.
I have another set of lower arms and box inserts that I'm going to have my neighbor weld in for me, then press in new bushings... and i'll take off my uppers and install new bushings...
I do have new KYB shocks, and I run the AirLift 1000 airspring inserts. Normally I drive around with both sides inflated to about 10 lbs. Tomorrow i'll deflate the drivers down to like 2 or 3 (min allowd) and pump up the pass to about 14lbs to help with the torque roll.
gotago Jun 8th, 07, 2:16 AM Man, the way its going its going to be TC brackets pretty soon.:D
I know, I'm just flat out dying to get to the track. 4 years of work, and I ain't saying how much in coin, I need to know what this car will run. Need a few trips to Monroe, before I take Her to the "Big Track".
Also need to hit the Dyno, I really wanna know what She's putting down.
kettbo Jun 8th, 07, 2:30 AM All the prep sounds like fun! Looks like an interesting evening. Beat some imports down, ok?
Ben, how much initial timing? Total timing? vacuum reading?
How is your launching practice coming along?
RAMBO Jun 8th, 07, 2:45 AM Hey Frank- I don't know for sure, but i know pacific raceway has this rule- Drivers must have full length PANTS... No shorts. I made that mistake one of my first times down there and had to run to Target to buy pants.
So don't wear shorts!
:)
Long sleeve shirt, long pant's is standard. I did see it in Evergreen's rule's, anybody running NASCAR, has to have a suit.
flink69SS Jun 8th, 07, 10:48 AM Frank, Ben, what are You guy's running for rear suspension?
Edelbrock Performer AIF Shocks(something like that) boxed lowers and Hotchkis 1" lowering springs.
Dave Jun 8th, 07, 12:28 PM Edelbrock Performer AIF Shocks(something like that) boxed lowers and Hotchkis 1" lowering springs.
What about Your upper's? With the lowering spring's it can mess with Your pinion angle. I had all kind's of issue's till I got the Edelbrock adjustable uppers, once I got that squared away, it really changed the launch of the car.
flink69SS Jun 8th, 07, 3:34 PM Does anyone know if I can run my overflow line into my windshield water bottle?
Get at least a 16 oz pop bottle, and duct tape it really well, somewhere good. Then get a piece of 3/8's rubber hose, to run from the overflow to the bottle. Good enough for Monroe.
FRYNTYR Jun 8th, 07, 4:46 PM Does anyone know if I can run my overflow line into my windshield water bottle?
Sure,,,if it's 16 oz plus, you're good to go.
