: Getting rust off chrome
6ELKY7 Jun 5th, 07, 2:47 PM Hey- when I was young, I was put to task to getthe rust off the chrome on the wheels on an old car. I think it was a 53 Chevrolet? anyway, It worked!! The chrome polish was in a white can that said Chrome Polish on it. The stuff was pink and it took rust off the chrome. Of course, this was Arizona rust.
Anyway, Does anybody know of a good chrome cleaner/ polish for my 1970's cragar ss wheels on the Elky?
This is going to be a salute to 70'shot rodding in my own sick way, so I am using the 14x6 and 15x10 Cragars I already have to do this.
Bowtie-72 Jun 5th, 07, 3:32 PM Depending on how bad it is, try a 0000 steel wool with something very mild like windex. Use a light touch just to be safe. If it's really light, you can try a magic eraser pad. Steel wool will do pretty good until you get bigger than pinhole pits. After that, you'll want to clear or seal them somehow.
69chevelle355 Jun 5th, 07, 3:40 PM i've always used aluminum foil balled up with LOTS of water and a very careful touch....works like a charm. after you've done that just go back and polish them!
Mike O'H Jun 5th, 07, 5:15 PM I had great success with the 0000 steel wool and WD40 for lub.
camarofreak Jun 5th, 07, 5:19 PM best for removing rust from chrome that i know of is turtle wax chrome polish in the little bottle . I have had good luck with that stuff!!!
floyd66 Jun 5th, 07, 7:01 PM Household cleaner "VIM" in the green bottle. Cheap and better than dedicated automotive chrome products. I use it all the time, will remove that dull tarnish and small rust specs.
savage71chevelless Jun 5th, 07, 7:37 PM I think that pink stuff is naval jelly, no?
My65CaliWagon Jun 5th, 07, 8:13 PM What is that Vintage stuff 'Route 66'? I've seen classic looking ads of that stuff. Did it switch names or no longer around?
I agree with that Turtle Wax Chrome Polish, It's the only chrome polish I used a while back and it did remove rust. Love the smell too! :D Smells like the car wash!:)
Slick71ss Jun 5th, 07, 9:46 PM I use Nevr Dull. Cotton wading with a cleaning/polishing solvent in it.

D Stroud Jun 6th, 07, 7:51 AM You guys would be suprised at what vinagar will do to rust.
I soak all my nuts and bolt in vinagar for a few days and the rust just melts off of em. They come out looking brand new.
I have a tub that I fill with 2-3 gallons of vinagar for soaking larger brackets and such.
Probably won't help much on larger chrome pieces, but I thought I would throw it out there for other rusty stuff.
Merlin Jun 6th, 07, 8:08 AM I think that pink stuff is naval jelly, no?
Naval Jelly has always worked for me too. Most recently removed some heavy rust from some parts to a bicycle I'm restoring.
Bruce_68 Jun 7th, 07, 1:33 PM I always used 0000 steel wool with WD-40 followed with a good wipe down using chrome polish. I think I usually used the Turtle Wax polish.
6ELKY7 Jun 8th, 07, 1:11 PM Thanks everybody!
Hopefully I can save my 14 x 6" front Cragars and the set of less bad off 15 x 10 for out back.
I love not spending money!
