Okay,

Dreaming of new wheels for my budget cruiser... I need new rear tires anyway. Its a '70 Chevelle. I WANT to go 275/40/17 up front and 315/35/17 in the rear (Nitto 555R's).

BUT, because of the budget issue, I'd really like to get wheels that I can eventually put on my '66 (it'll be a few years)...

Here what I know:

1966:
Front; 275/40/17 on 17X9.5 with 6.0" BS (C5 Vette brakes). I was running stock upper arms and clearance was fine. Could possibly go 5.75" BS...

Rear: 275/40/17 on 17X9.5 with 5.5" BS Plenty of room. Since the total rim width is 10.5 inch, then the "front spacing is 5.0 inch (10.5 OA-5.5 BS = 5.0").

What I have read on 1970's:
Front: 275/40 on 17X9.5 with 5.5" BS. Clint mentioned (in another thread today) that 6.0" BS could fit with tubular arms (so I guess I could use spacers, if needed).

Rear:
315/35/17 on 17X11...
The Database shows about 6.75" BS
Clint mentioned about 6.25"

6.75" BS equates to about 5.25" "Front Spacing" (12" overall - 6.75" = 5.25").

I am planning on "mini-tubbing" the '66 to fit the 315s on the back... Since I'd like about 5.0 to 5.25 on the "front spacing" (to "match the previous 17X9.5 rears), I'd need a Back Spacing of about 6.75 to 7.0" ...

Sound about right?

Just about any wheel & tire combo that fits a 66-67 front will also fit a 68-72 front. That's not the case on the rear as you know. Unless Keith Anderson's backspace numbers have slipped my mind,I don't know of anyone running 6.75" backspace.
