Let's say the seat belts are manufactured Nov. 2002. What year would they expire?

2004. Seat belts are good for 2 years, so if you're belts say 2002, you need new ones.

So my ~40 year old belts should be worthless. I guess it makes sense that the stitching would frey and weaken over time.

2 years is a joke. What if you've only ran your car a half dozen times in two years? Throw the almost brand new belts away and buy new ones?

I know a few guys who replace new belts with new belts...The career test and tuners that don't race in the summer because it's too hot, don't race in November because it's too cold, but race in the spring just to run fast in the mineshaft conditions, and go home early due to their .2XX light in the first round :noway:

You can send them back to the company that made them and they will recert them for you. I send all my SFI stuff back and get a recert on it.You have to pay for the recert but it is alot cheaper than buying new :thumbsup:

sounds like a good way to ensure long term profits for the safety harness companies.
if a track will let slower cars run with stock 40 year old belts, why can't they let the same car with 3 year old aftermarket belts run?

When did they stop? I had my Simpson belts rewebbed/recert just a few weeks ago.

You could't have had your Simpson belts rewebbed/recertified by Simpson since they haven't offered this service for years!

Saftey is one thing but pushing it to make money is wrong.
Aircraft seatbelt get a check, if they are not frayed or the stiching is not cut they are signed off servicable.
It should be up to the tech inspector at the track to check this is not the situation and alowed to run, or replace.

FOOTBRAKER: I have to say I'm sorry. You are right they do not recert anymore, The last set they did for me was in 01. I have been sending mine back for recert and just thought the price went up on that service (I never asked). What they have been doing is discounting a new set of belts if you send in your old set.

"So my ~40 year old belts should be worthless".....same way a brand new race harness is "worthless" in a street car. your 40 yr old belts (frays and all) are DOT legal but a new harness is not. :rolleyes:
i never got the 2 yr thing for racing either. do they just start unraveling at that age?....i've got a tow strap thats about 15 years old and still stretches and yanks a 4 digger out of a mudhole just like it did when it was brand new.
just wondering, how fast do you got to be to require a harness and the two year renewal?
