Just curious if anyone here as ever been to Bonneville Salt Flats ? Or has any plans on ever going ?
I went for the first time in August for " Speed Week " and had a Great time !! Totally differant than a Drag Race and there is really so much more to it.
With this guys .. If they dont set a record .. thats it .. if the do .. they get their name on a peice of paper basically. No round money .. or any money for that matter. They can also get into the " 2 Club " which is for running 200 or 300 MPH.
I'm heading back out there for their " World Finals " the weekend of Oct. 13th - 16th.
One freind of mone lost his record in August and will be there to attempt to get it back. His record was at 259.xx, now its at 284.xx and I expect him to go upwards of 300mph. This is in an open bodied Roadster.

I've always been interested in it. Never been though. I could go out to the desert, SCTA has trials several times a year.
Some years ago I though about going after a record. There are lots available. I figured some low class with something like a slant six. Maybe go 120 and get my name in a record book.
I've been looking at this a little bit more recently. I'd like to make it out to Bonneville. It sounds like a really awesome experience.
Would be nice to set a world record, wouldn't it?
I just found out about the "purely for the glory" angle about a year or two ago. I had always thought that it there was some type of payout for running. It's got to be one of the purest exercises in speed on the planet. They get some recognition, but no money. I like it!

Pat .. The guy that will be going to try and get his record back ( or possibly watch it go higher ) also runs at El Mirage Dry Lakes with his " Street Car " Which has a Blown Injected BBC on Gas. One of the car mags did an article on it a couple of years ago about it being " The Worlds Fastest Kit Car " He does have the records at El Mirage for AA/BSTR, A/BSTR, B/BSTR and C/BSTR with speeds from 184.xx to 211.xx I know this car has gone 233+.
There are so many differant classes to choose from, but of course the deal is to run the max cid you can in your class. And to pick an engine that has heads available that will flow great.
And throw that combo into a sleek body.
Tom.. Land Speed Racing is the purest form of racing there is, there is NO corporate sponsership or the BS that goes along with it. These guys have to love doing this .. They pay an entry fee of approx 300 $ and get none of it back.
Even as a spectator it is great !!! Very laid back and relaxing, no crowds or drunks to deal with and at only 5 $ a day or 20 $ for the week .. very affordable. Not counting travel or lodgeing, food etc. of course
The pits started 4 miles from the starting line and were approx. 1 mile long and 1/4 mile deep.
We brought 2 little 70cc motorcycles and cruised around all day. We parked the truck and set up " camp " at the 2 1/4 mile mark which is where the first speeds clocks are. From there we would cruise around from to the short course and back around to the long course pased the pits to the approx. 5 1/2 mile point. which I'm sure was a 9+ mile trip easily.
Here's a link for anyone that has thought about going ... Everything you need to know can be found here. http://www.landracing.com/
Dont forget sunblock, dark ( and I mean dark !!! ) sunglasses and a straw hat
