Dang, I'm taking the family camping up in Marblemount.

Frank, if You got something to tow with, You can rent a nice trailer at U-HAUL, for 50.00 a day. They work really slick, and for just a couple extra buck's, You can get an extra insurance policy.

If you blow up,,,,I live close and have a tilt trailer.

I can't make it because of work(I've already taken a few extra days of vacation) but I could likely get off at 10:30 and meet for a beverage.

Frank- Remember, I've got a freshly painted car and an empty wallet, so I'm deathly afraid of breaking anything- so I'll be taking it easy....
No trailer, so I'll be driving it in(and out hopefully!)- but I think we do need to get Darryl's Phone # just in case one of us needs a tow!

Just imagine a metered freeway onramp with timing equipment! :)

I need to call and find out exactly the rules for the helmets... if they are required for everybody, then i need to go out and find a cheap used one somewhere...

FRYNTYR
Jun 4th, 07, 3:59 PM
Very low key at monroe for helmet usage. Whatever you have would be fine unlike the SA2000 requirements for NHRA. My old SA/M90 was still usable at monroe.

I believe bracket 5 and higher may be the only ones that reqiuire one but it's good practice for everyone to have one.
You can have passengers as well!!!!

When I ran up there last month the tech guy asked if I had one and I said yes. I didn't mention its a M-85... (Ok I'm old LOL)
I didn't see anyone racing without a helmet but I'm sure any helmet would do.

At what ET does NHRA require a hemet?
Also, are driveshaft hoops required on all cars now at NHRA tracks?

I MIGHT make it up there Friday but money is very tight at the moment so we'll have to see.

I think if you're 13.99 or faster, you'll need a helmet and driveshaft loop. You need a driveshaft loop if you're running slicks regardless of time.

I don't think a driveshaft loop is required. I'm sure Darryl knows for sure but I know my buddy ran his hot rodded work van with ladders on top and I don't think he had a d.s. loop.

I could race him with my S-10, and My trailer loaded with My chopsaw and tablesaw, and all the other crap I haul around..

My 29FT motorhome has a new exhaust system with flowmasters,,,,,,,sounds awesome. Should qualify to race as well. Not sure I could make the corner though at the high speed I'd hit by the end of the 1/8th. Maybe 40 MPH.

Wish I could go.
Seriously, if you guys meet afterwards for something to eat, I'll meet you. racing is usually over by 10 and I'd make sure I'm out of work by 10:30. :beers:

Hey Dave- I read somewhere that for NHRA the DS Loop is only required if you run 12.99 or faster. I can guarantee that I'm not running that fast- So I would rather save and use that money for a few other things...

Also- after reading a couple reviews of that loop, and people saying that they vibrated, or had to modify them- I'm now considering this one from BMR fabrication- Does bolt to the floor pan, but is made specifically for a-bodies so it should fit much better than the generic bolt on ones...

its about $100, so a little pricier than the other one...

I know scary/hard to believe. Thats what I plan though. I will probably put it on a chassis dyno after its broken in. Darryl said it should be 500+ at the crank, I am skeptical but it seems possible. What are you running for heads and what were your cam specs again? Its not like it was ever my intention to have more than you. I would have been happy with 450hp, but the way the parts are coming together it sounds like its going to be more. I am also going to weigh the elky after the swap just for giggles.

Frank and Brett,

Frank has a lotta power on tap
Darryl certainly has more recent BBC experience than me but the "old fella" has a lotta insight for the kid....

Are the first 4 gears similar in the TKO and Muncie M20? I am pretty sure at least 1st gear is higher, but that might just make hooking harder.? If anything Frank and I should be pretty well paired. Same displacement, medium buildup, manual car. The camino has a few more pounds over the rear tires, but my tires as of now are no match for him.

Here are the TKO gear ratios:
2.87

1.89

1.28

1.00

.64

Frank, you think your trans is your weakest link? Anything else you think might give out? I know you upgraded to a strong clutch. Does your rear have stock axles? Are you running a stock driveshaft? Also, what oil pan are you running(not related)?

George, you gonna come over to Darryl's and help with the build? Or at least shoot the $hit and help us get distracted? Without inviting everyone over in absense of Darryl's permission, I'm sure all of you could come over for show in tell of all my big block stuff, helping assembly, and the Berg Racing Automotive Museum! Beer for anyones help as bate, microbrew for Mark/Gotago since he wont drink the watered down stuff. ;)

What would you recommend running for PSI in regular street tires? 255/60's to be specific....

I think greg said he was running his 275s at about 25psi and noticed a little bit of improvement...

Looks like i've lined up a helmet- Now just need to pick up some new U-Joints today at lunch get them in tonight- weld some tabs on my batt tray for the hold down, and screw in my catch can and i'll be ready.

I actually dropped my BFG radial 265x50x15's to 20lbs from 32lbs.
It seemed to help a bit but by that time I had also realized how much I had been spinning, so I was lifting just slightly after launch. I would be nervous about spinning a bead with any less pressure.

I'm got a couple of possibilities coming together for a pair of rims for the drag radials Darryl contributed to my cause, hopefully I'll find out today.

I've seen two brand new never run pairs of drag radials on craigslist this week in the $250-350pr range if anyone is shopping. I think one pair were 26x10x15 the others were 28" or 29" x 10x15 if I remember right.

FRYNTYR
Jun 5th, 07, 3:50 PM
No worries about spinning beads on the rims at Monroe. Even if one has enough power to do it, the traction limitations at Monroe will give way before the bead would ever spin.

20 lbs on the drag radials should be perfect. I doubt I would go below that because 20 is about as low as one would want on a drag radial. Bias ply slicks or ET streets can go lower. I run about 10 lbs on my slicks.

I have an old pair of American chrome wheels if anyone wants them. They look just like Cragars. These are a bit rusty and are 15x8", they were on my '70 when I bought it. You can have the fronts too, they even have decent bfg tires on them, fronts are 14"

I'm gonna bail out of work here in Kirkland early at 4pm- so I should be heading out of my house & out to Monroe between 4:45 & 5:15... not sure what the fastest way to get out there that time of day... I think i'll probably take 180th all the way up to 522 and go that way.

I greased my u-joints last night, and started slapping together my battery hold down... Will button it back up tonight and will be ready to roll.
I borrowed a friends motorcycle helmet- but its only a half helmet- not sure if it will pass tech- i'll have to bug a couple more friends to see if i can find a full helmet.

Well kids- I did terrible- zero traction as expected, and i broke my throttle cable when i was swapping carbs, so it kept pulling out of the bracket keeping me from WOT after the launch.

But- it was still a blast. I left after 3 runs when bracket racing started. Frank blew my doors off the first run we got together-and he was still smokin the tire halfway down the track....

Anyway- i'll have a couple vids to post in a bit...

but here are my runs:

8.653 et
1.006 r/t
2.290 60ft

8.906 et
0.850 R/t
2.299 60ft

8.801 et
0.775 r/t
2.365 60ft

Pretty sad- but again, this is with zero traction (i WILL be getting drag radials!) and a messed up throttle cable and questionable carb.

Lots of excuses i know... but at least it looked good!

Betcha had fun.
I know you have those meats on the back rims...
For some reason think 255/60 on 8".
If so, this is what I have on those ugly rims that are now shiny courtesy of Marks's POWER BALL.
I'd drop the ASS End of the car down...helps with wt transfer, puts more wt on the rear tires, makes better suspension geometry...instant center....lower trailing arm parallel to the ground....I saw on the threads someone who will be nameless talking about raising the front of his car out of the weeds....

Today I was slightly high in the air shocks....this showed when GOTAGO had a ride in my Elky...... Then again, this helps my sagging frt suspension clear parking lot bumps and the lip on my driveway....

wish I coulda seen the whole tree in the vids...to watch your chassis react with the tree....

Oh well, I'm just looking forward to going back again after i can make a few fixes...

Ben,

Again, good vids.
Next time, do them so you can see the tree 45 deg angle.
Good to review the tapes like in Pro sports.

I saw the smoke, carb problems are fun!
I buzzed the ol 350 today, guess 5800-6000 for GOTAGO. I got a stuck secondary needle and seat for my trouble. This is 2x now, so new needle and seat. Quick fix. The immediate fix today was to thump the float bowels with a rock to do the actual un-sticking.
I do not have the very best throttle bracket. I believe it shifted, maybe not getting 100% opening today.....IF you don't already have one, a good throttle bracket is a must. Once ya install it, engine off, look down the carb
while someone else sits in the car and mashes the pedal. Most cars do not get full throttle opening. The good mounting brackets allow you to slide your stuff around, get full opening.

Re leaving it in drive:
For now, ok.
With governer tuning and some play with an adjustable SMALL modulator, you could in theory get your trans to shift repeatedly at 5500 rpm. In my Nova with built BBC 427 and 4.56, 1st gear was pretty quick. I toyed with the concept to save the engine from over-revvvving and to build consistancy.
A small modulator gives a firmer shift. Do you have a shift kit?

I can tell you that my nice-shifting TH350 when I had 2.56 gears is a BEAST now with the 3.42. Ask gotago. If you do NOT have a shift kit, get one. I'll even help you put it in. Pretty basic stuff.....:boring:

I wonder where that kid is tonight.....kinda quiet....

Pete, those are great times. Looks like that converter works well. I'm glad you had a good time Ben, it's all in the tunning and I'm sure you will get it figured out.

Nice job guys!
I'm glad that no one had any major failures. :hurray:

Anyone have 10 of those lug nuts that are necked down and go inside the wheel? If not I need to pick up enough for the rear wheels.

I tried to stick those 2" spin in spacers in my rear springs but the coils are wound to loose to hold them. Guess I need to step up and get rear air bags so I can help my rear suspension out.

You guys are getting me all wound up again!

OK, just woke cause Darryl met up with me and a buddy on his way home and kept me out way too late...;)

Here's how my night went...

Runs 1-5- Smoked 'em through 2 gears (Mark, sound familiar???)
Run 6- Hooked and broke out (That is the run that would have put me up for 1st or 2nd)
Run 7- Smoked 'em 3/4 the way down the track like a mad man.

Here are some numbers-

ET 8.09
RT 0.67
60' 2.264 (This was the run against the Stang where I smoked the tires through 2 gears)

ET 8.159
RT 0.606
60' 2.311

ET 8.234
RT 0.564
60' 2.481

ET 7.846 :)
RT 0.813 :(
60' 2.137 (This is the only run I hooked up on and LET OFF at the end because I was smoking the guy and still broke out)

I'm hooked and I'll be back next Friday night...

Frank, good going, converts your 6.84 to 12.3 sec on the FORD conversion utility that gave Ben 13.54. Both of you complaining about traction......sounds like this utility is pretty generous.

GILBY, what are you using to do the conversion?
Your 7.52...= 11.8 in 1/4 is impressive! One SMOKIN' SBC!!!

Pete,
I've got a 750vac secondary that I'm running on my 350. If you want to swap for awhile and see how it acts with the bigger carb, I'm game.

I'm not sure what the SS lugs look like but I need this style...http://store.summitracing.com/largeimage.asp?part=WLD-601-1426&Prod=Weld+Racing+Lug+Nuts&img=wld-601-1426.jpg

They don't have to be open ended. Are these similar to what you have?

Gilby,

I have a 3310-2 sitting on the shelf.
The choke is removed....
She's a take-off from RatVette
I have some rebuilder parts for it, and I won't have a use for it til AUG.
It is stock style with the metering plate, not secondary metering block.
Tacoma, down by Ft Lewis though.....
How about AHSOM Ben's 2nd carb?

Gilby,
I'm quite generous with the three spare speed parts I have!
Anyway, I better stick to the races at Monroe or I'll get scolded again.

Hey FLINK,
I understand you had some pretty good rubber under your car. You made practice launches before the race and a few trial runs before you "figgered" out what worked for your car and Monroe's launch pad. What was your technique? Slide the clutch? Stab it and steer?

Any idea from your speedo what MPH range you may have reached at the finish line? How far into third gear?

AHSOM,
I'm really proud of ya! Though hard to tell from the side angle, looks like AHSOM was having a hell of a time....looks like the tail end of your Elky was sliding around like on glass....
What do you suppose your trap speed was?

I'm putting in for some sort of minimal work day or maybe a day off on 14 JUL.
Got a lot of preppin to do.

All three of my Slips show trap speed as 05.x mph... I assume that must mean 105mph... I was a little distracted with slowing down for the turn that I didn't look at the speedo....

Each launch the rear end kicked to the right and just spun the hell out of the tires.. if you watch closely one of them you can see the tire smoking halfway down the track.... Each time my throttle cable pulled itself out of the bracket during the launch so after it i only had partial throttle, not WOT- if you listen in the videos you can hear my revs fall off after 60ft then come back on. I didn't lift- thats the throttle cable coming off....

Anyway... I was very excited by it all... Don't know if i will get back down there next friday, but definitely the next on after that. Hopefully i can get up to Darryls soon and have him work his magic on this carb.

Now that it is "working" i'm thinking of trying the second metering block they sent me again... it has restrictors in the idle circuts which should help to reduce the uber rich idle i had. It doesn't have the ported vacume drilled out though, so might have to put it on my new drill press and do that myself first...

We'll see. Busy cleaning and organising my garage right now... Next weekend is looking like i'll be busy tiling my bathroom shower surround finnally (waiting for my neighbor to be done using his tile saw) so probably minimal car fun...

:-)

How long was it between runs? I'm running dual electric fans, just for times like this, just need to wire in a manual override to kill them during the race. I'm shooting for the 22nd, until the next thing comes up. I did however set out July 14th for sure.

kettbo
Jun 11th, 07, 12:16 AM
Ben,

I do believe those trap speeds were just rubbish.
105 mph would be a very good 1/4 mile mph. You'd probably be looking at something in the 80s in the 1/8 mile.

re traction
FWIW, my Elky fries em, ass-end moves to the right toooo. Swell.

Carbs:
I'm looking at that 3310 and planning the upgrades. Sec metering block, 74/84 jetting, etc. Test it on RatVette. Good low-buck project in the next few months after I limit RatVette's mech adv. RatVette likes 18 initial. Whatcha running your initial and total timing at?

RAMBO
Jun 11th, 07, 12:42 AM
My timing per Salle Chev's Race Shops rec's is 38 deg total, i think my initial is around 18 also.
