i have a 67 malibu with a 283,i'm having some starting problems, when i start car cold,it starts ok,if i go for a ride somewhere and turn off car and start car back up within 5 minutes of turning it off,its starts ok.any longer then that and car is hard to start.(almost like it's not getting fuel right away???)i,ve recently installed new starter, alternator, fuel pump, hei distributor, manifold and carb..this is only problem i'm having!!

I've had the same problem with my 72 ss. I found out that the starter is getting hot and it expands some part inside of the starter and makes it hard to start. If you have headers or don't have a starter heat shield, this sounds like the same problem I was having.

i am having the same problem with one of my cars. i was told the fuel is percolating out of the carb and flooding the motor when hot. i bought a heat insulator gasket. haven't installed it yet so don't know for sure. what kind of carb do you have?

That may be the cause of my problem, I run headers and sometimes it hard to start my 70

Could the timing be too far advanced?

when i read the original post, I got the impression that the car rolls over fine but just won't fire, is that the case? Timing advanced to far and it will roll over hard. Heat soak on the starter and it won't turn over at all.

check that the fuel line is not close to a high heat source. boiling fuel makes for hard starting, used to be commonly called "vapor lock". cure was lots of wooden clothes pins on fuel line between pump and carb.

All I know is when my starter got hot, it could barely turn my engine over (but it still did). I was afraid I was going to be stranded for an hour or so until it cooled off. But that was my problem, apparently your problem is something with fuel.

For what it is worth, I have the same problem with my vert and the Edelbrock carb on it...post your findings as it may solve the same problem for several of us! I'm thinking heat is my problem too...

Edelbrock 750 on mine (when it was not in pieces) and I fought this for quite a while. Insulator under the carb, inner and outer doors / flappers on the cowl hood left open at all times (removed the cowl induction set up) and never had an issue after that so guessing that heat was my problem since I never went after anything but that and it solved the issue.

I have had 2 cars have simular issues,it seems to be connected with the new fuel that we are buying at the pump, used a thicker gasket between carb and manifold, problem solved. Also use hi-torque starter, works great!

If it rolls over hard after getting hot it could be your starter if it is a reman unit. The bendix in the reman units are usually junk. I ran into a similar problem with mine and replaced the bendix with a good heavy duty unit from Napa and problem solved.

This isn't a starter problem - it has plenty of rpms. I'm definately leaning towards too much heat... I think I just added another project to my never ending "to-do" list.

Has anyone tried a cool can on their gasline?...just a thought

i put the carb insulator gasket in today and it appears that the problem is solved.
