Hi Mike,
I've read some of your replies and from what I've read your a good source of engine info. Or if anybody cares to chime in it's all good reading for me. Anyway, I'm looking for the best cam. I have a 454 30 over with .100 dome hyper pistons and the 215 closed chamber heads. I currently have the xe268 cam and I'm looking for a better cam for the combo. I'm currenly taking the short block to a place in Joliet IL. called Winners Circle and thier taking it to a Machine shop in Joliet that builds engines and dyno's them. I'm hoping to deck the block and bring compression to around 10 to 1. Any sugestions on what I should have the shop do to the block? BTW I'm taking the heads with me and there going to put the short block together and give me a warranty if they break it in on the dyno. Decking and all the work they do and dynoing is going to run 1500 and up depending on how much work and parts go back into her. Engine has very little wear on last rebuild. Thanks in advance! Stacey

If I lived closer to you I'd have you do it. smile.gif

What to do,hmmm,, the usual, check the main bores, set the deck, measure everything while you can.
Problem with doing this is if the block was not bored off the mains originally it is about impossible to get the deck square with the bores.
The machine shop that does it will have to make the call as to weather they can get it straightened out if you are not reboring it.
Sometimes you need to "cheat" a bit :D
If all you are doing is raising the compression there are easier ways to go than completely disassembling the engine though,,,,

Cam, something in the mid 270's to low 280's should work just fine for a hyd.
I normally use Isky but am still waiting for them to get some more shelf hyd cams especially for the Rat.
They have a couple of fair cams but I think they could stand a little more "variety" here,,
I like their 270/280 Mega hyd but I'd close up the centerlines to 112 for a 454.

Get a recommendation from Harold, it's what he does & word is the new "VooDoo" ( I hate that name  ) stuff is pretty damn good but I haven't had the opportunity to try any yet :(

Thanks Mike, I need to deck the block because of a nick at the top #1 cylinder wall. So machining will be required. I'm pretty sure the machine shop bored the block last time correctly.
I'll get a hold of Herald about a cam. A buddy of mine has a XE274 that I would like to try but that cam calls for dual springs and I don't know how much machine work that will be require on my heads. I have the 215 closed chamber with machined valve guides for positive seals. Thanks again! Stacey

The springs should be a drop-in deal with small positive seals for that cam.
