: Subtract two problems ........ Add one new
70BB Apr 22nd, 04, 11:04 PM Put a new Stewart stage 2 water pump and performance T-stat on the 496 today.Temp went from 215 to 195 smile.gif . Changed the Holley 110 fuel pump to a Carter 172,no more oil on the motor mount and starter smile.gif .BUT.....low end performance seems to be off a little, not quite as spunky as it was and while out test driving it died at two stop signs(never did that before}.Had to hold the accelerator all the way to the floor to crank it back up.Would the fuel pump change cause this?
70ss496 Apr 22nd, 04, 11:20 PM I guess the float wasn't partially stuck open was it? Just a guess happened to me when I first got my motor together, had some of the rubber from the inside of the braided line stick the needle and seat. Just a thought...

70BB Apr 22nd, 04, 11:42 PM Ya know ,my step dad mentioned it might be some trash in the carb.I'll check that out this weekend.Maybe I just need to retune the carb again to try and get back my low end response.
bigjimzlll Apr 23rd, 04, 12:33 AM what carb? are you running a regulator?
70ss496 Apr 23rd, 04, 12:36 AM If you are running a regulator that could be part of the problem, I'm running the same pump and I believe your not suppost to run a regulator with it, atleast I'm not.

70BB Apr 23rd, 04, 7:09 AM No regulator,removed it when I changed to the Carter pump.With the Holley 110 and regulator I had about 9psi @ crank-up and 5psi after running around a little while.The new Carter 172 shows 7psi @ crank-up and 3-4psi after running a while.
70BB Apr 23rd, 04, 7:17 AM Carb is a Holley 850 with mechanical secondaries.
bigjimzlll Apr 23rd, 04, 9:12 AM Pull a plug and see if its wet...probably an obstruction at the needle and seat
JRS70LS5 Apr 23rd, 04, 11:45 AM 70BB,your saying it has 7psi and drops to 3 or 4psi after the engine is warm are you using a liquid filled gauge, the reason I ask is the liquid gauges are inacurate after the engine warms up,I found this out after pulling my fuel system apart, and still had the same problem, replaced the gauge no more problem! graemlins/clonk.gif
70BB Apr 23rd, 04, 1:11 PM Yes sir,I am useing a liquid filled gauge. What type/brand would work best?
Johnny O Apr 23rd, 04, 7:38 PM I was gonna ask the same question about the gauge...Im assuming you have the gauge at the carb?? Mine is outside the windshield on the cowl, and it's 7# hot, cold, or whenever...it shouldnt drop pressure when the engine gets warm, the pump puts out the same pressure regardless of temp. If the gauge is inaccurate, that should be changed first if you are concerned about the fuel pressure. What pressure does that pump put out?? Maybe you dont need a regulator if it's low enough.
