Hello, I have a low comp. 396 about 9:1. I want to go with a Roller Hyd cam this time, nothing extreme, please give me all the specs for a good cam for me. I have searched the posts but see nothing for the low comp engine.
Thanks for the help, Steve

Talk to Harold or one of his reps (I think Steve?? not sure his name) at lunati, and grab a .600 lift series hyd. roller from them. be sure to grab all the parts you need, and recommendations on parts you will need (pushrods).
Cammotion also has an _excellent_ line of hyd. rollers. Open up your wallet though, the lifters alone go for almost 400.

After having looked at a hundred cams and calculating the DCR for my 9.5/1 408 motor, I have come to the conclusion that anything over 272-275 adv. intake duration will turn the 396 based motors into a slug unless the motor has 10.0/1 or better. And with that in mind, there are only a few off the shelf cams that fit the model. Isky has one, a couple of the small Comp Extreme rollers (but these don't have much lift), maybe one of the smaller Crowers or the Crane 278??.
Personally, I shelved the hyd. roller and am going solid roller - at least that's the plan.

Hey Steve,
I have to agree with Matt on this one.I have a 396 that is 60 over with 10 3/4 to 1 comp. I am running a hydraulic roller cam that has 610"lift on the street with a 3000 stall converter. It is a little radical for the street and vacuum isn't the greatest but it runs really good in the power band.If you are going to street the car I would go no larger then a 600" lift, maybe try a 595 lift instead. It depends on what your going to do with the vehicle. and like Matt said...cam- $250 lifters-$400 pushrods $100
good luck on your decision. Mike
