Looking for alittle help with my new build, I am looking to restore my 67 SS 396 this summer, I want to start with the carb/ intake.

What do you guys think is a good carb/intake setup for a street 396?
Not looking to go crazy on the motor just something I can start and drive to shows and stuff

The stock carb is a 650 corrct ?

Thanks

Edelbrock Performer RPM and a 750 vacuum secondary Holley.
For a mild 396 it will be fine out of the box.Bolt it on and go.
Stock carb is a 750 cfm QJet I believe.

Depends on which engine. 325 & 350hp were ovals, 375hp was rect. EGR didn't come into use until a few years later (but CA cars got smog pumps). Also, each hp version used a different carb. 325's were Qjet, 350's were 585 Holley, and 375's were 780 Holley.

Dont need no AirGap, or a "Speed" demon, which if you read these pages are a bit more finicky than Holleys. There's nothing wrong with them, but a standard rpm, or old C396 with a Holley 3310 is what you need. If the manifold is dual flange, you could use a reman Qjet as well.

Non egr and match the head ports (oval/rect)

We run a Q'jet on our 455 Lemans and is as smooth as they come and gives good gas mileage too. If you have one of these carbs, it would pay to rebuild it and put it back on the car. The old 585 Holleys that came on some were also pretty good and gave decent mileage.

I have had the pleasure of using and tuning both Street Avenger in 570/670 and Barry Grant 625 Road Demon and 850vs Speed Demon.

If you want a "close" tune, go with the Holley. If you want to make some power, and don't mind spending the time to get it right, then get the Demon.

Most people do not take the time to properly tune the Demons, and get fustrated and say they are crap. They are a little touchy and sensative to adjust, but they have the features to properly dial them in. If you are paying attention and know what you are doing, once it is set up right, you will love it. My 850vs Speed Demon replaced a Holley 850 vac sec carb, 80531, same as used on the ZZ502.

Take one stock 325hp/396 engine, add a good old CC 280 Magnum cam, a 3310-2 Holley on their oval port high-rise along w/ a set of 1.75", 4-tube, long headers and you will be right at a schosh/c-hair under 400hp!!

and you have time slips to prove the Demon was better I suppose:confused: I dont know how many times on this website I've read where somebody took their BG apart and found shavings inside from building/assembling.

If you need to get a new setup, go for the performer or performer RPM intake with a Street AVenger 770. It will run so good it will bring a tear to your eye, and you wont have to screw with it to make it run nice.

If you search around on this site I think you will find the above is very accurate and probably your best bet if you want hassle free out of the box streetable performance.

A good dual plane and a Q-jet is still the best unless it is a very serious motor. Keep the cam on the mild side you don't have a lot of cubes.
