: Terrible 60-ft times...

I got the car out on Friday for it's very first run at the track (and first 20 miles on the road). Turns out my helmet is the wrong certification, so I was kicked out after my first pass.

Anyway, the first run wasn't so good as usual. Here's the whole timeslip:
RT: 0.519
60: 2.326
330: 5.861
1/8: 8.750 @ 85.50
1000: 11.227
1/4: 13.332 @ 106.79

The guy I was racing against ran the same MPH but a 12.78 ET, and his 1/8 MPH was 2MPH less than mine. Towards the end of the track, I was catchin' up to him real good.

Anyway, the motor is quite detuned, but that's obvious. Tranny short shifted every time, too. I was just surprised by the bad 60'. I'm running 275/60 Drag T/As, Cal-Tracs (with 1 turn preload), and new springs. I had 18PSI in the tires. I launched at about 70-80% throttle to keep from roasting the tires, but I guess it didn't help.

I'd like to hear all your thoughts.

You do have mid 12's potential there. There are some here who have had very good results with DR's, I'm not one. I couldn't get them to hook at all. The moment I put slicks on my 60's improved by .3-.4 of a second. But the worst part was the inconsistancy. On one pass I'd have a 1.95 then the next would be a 2.28. If you can get the 60's below 2 seconds, you'll have 12's.

You should shift it youself. You can fine tune the auto shifting but doing yourself is best.

Your light was excellent (if .500 is a perfect light smile.gif , at the tracks I go to it is). If .000 is perfect, don't worry about it.

You gained 21 mph in the 2nd half. Thats pretty good. I usually get a 21-22 mph gain.

From my experience with DR's, you have to burn the heck out of them to get them sticky enough to hook up. Much more so than a slick or DOT slick. Maybe try a little John Force look-alike next time out and see if it gets any better.

My D/R work great, but I do have to heat them up some. What I do is do my burn out in Drive, let the tranny go through the gears, hold rpm's @ around 3500,hold for about 4sec's and out of the box.My 60ft's have been in the LOW 170's.W/ 18lbs of air. Hope this helps.

I am going out on a limb to state that if you get your sixty foot time down to under 2.0 I would not be suprised if you ran 12.3's, from my experience I ran 14.2 with 2.3 sixty foot at 104 mph then drop down to 2.0 (BEST TO DATE)at 106 MPH to run a 13.2 (BEST TO DATE). Tunning is the key so you are on the right track.

That stands for both You and Matt

I agree with you. I hope to get the 60' down to 1.7X, but not sure how at this point. The motor should be able to pull a 12.50 or better, I think.

I've always seen that Chevelles tend to get good 60' times with their coil suspensions. Wish my Camaro could do that.

Chris thats what I have been told mid 12's so hopefully I can prove that theory, I just put in a 10inch two piece 2800 stall for the 700r4 looking to get that sixty foot time under 2.0.

Silver69Camaro
You are running 13.2 with a 2.3 sixty foot time your car is for sure low, low 12's, I would bet money on it!

Myself, I feel if you can't nail it to the floor on the launch.....why are you at the dragstrip?
I know people here have gone fast on drag radials. But real slicks seem to be the only way to go. Put em in the trunk, bolt em on when you get there.
A couple of things you might try....loosen the preload on the CalTracs. 1 turn is pretty tight......unless you have slicks. Also, maybe leave just above idle so the car can transfer the weight.
I used CalTracs quite successfully on my Nova....until I bought the Landrum mono leaf springs Calvert recommended. Car never hooked right again. So I sold the CalTracs. I think they like weaker springs.

I particulary went to the track to tune my car in a Test N Tune matter, I wanted to first tune the car and see the improvements in incremental stages. My car is set-up more for protouring with all the suspension modification, rather than drag noted also that I want to know how fast my car runs in all street trim thats were my Nitto 555R drag radials come in. I'm trying to get my car to take down one of those '04 or higher Cobra's.

Nitto 555R's? That's your problem right there.

they kicked you out for the wrong helmet, running 13's ?!?!? that's retarded. At my local track, they won't say a word about a helmet unless you're in the 11's.

Boy, in the 11's you better have a roll cage by that time. He was very adament that I didn't go faster than 13.99. By the time the car hooked, I was catching up with the car that I knew was running 12.50's, so I pretty much knew I was gonna go too fast.

Now that I think about it in the past, when the tech guy asks if I have a helmet, I show it to him, and he says "OK, thanks". Never checked it.

Just an update, I went to the track again this Friday. Unfortunately, my track time was limited because I keep throwing the alternator/WP belt (even with a DG alternator pulley). Anyway, I managed to get my 60' down to a 2.08 (from 2.3x) with a mild burnout and less preload on the Caltracs, and 20PSI in the tires. This gave me a 0.5 second reduction in ET from 13.3 to 12.84. I still have to launch at 50-75% throttle.

If I continue to tune the motor (which I haven't even done yet), and reduce my 60' to 1.7X, I may have a shot at a real low 12. I hope!

This makes me feel good. With street tires and a 2.0-2.1 60ft... I ran 13.3@106 I'd love to see mid 12s~~~!!!!! Then just a play shot of the giggle juice to poke me into the 11's.

SWEEET!
