hey guys,

i am restoring my 72 chevelle and im stuck on something. the car is a 72 chevelle 454 ss. But it was not equipped with the cowl induction accessory when it came out of the factory, as there is no indication on the build sheet. I am restoring the car with out cowl induction now as well. What type of air cleaner was equipped on the an ss 454 w/ cowl induction? was it still equipped with cowl induction air cleaner, where ther is a long tube that sticks out of the cleaner that all flapper cars had? My engine does have a tube out of it which i believe does connect to the cleaner. i am stumped. any help would be appreciated. thanks, alek.

I thought all 454's had Cowl Ind.? I am probably just thinking of the SS option.

I believe the tube your talking about is the choke stove & yes c/i cars had them.

my SS 454 4 speed car came with the ZL2 pkg. but the air cleaner is long gone. The repro air cleaners come correct for a '72 model car.

ps. no not all SS OR SS 454's had the ZL1 option but it was only offered on BB cars from the factory in '71& '72.

Dan, I think you mean that the repro cowl induction air cleaners are only correct for a 70ss. The repro cowl air cleaners do not have the thermac and the snorkel is not angled down like a 71 or 72 cowl air cleaner should be.

On your second point I believe you also meant to say ZL2 (cowl induction), not ZL1 (aluminum 427).

Alek, Almost forgot, The correct air cleaner without the cowl induction option is a closed element single snorkel with Thermac on the snorkel that is connected to the exhaust maniford heat stove via an extension and flexible tube.

Good luck with project.
