: went to the track today..
mr 4 speed Feb 29th, 04, 6:48 PM Good 'ole Englishtown/Raceway Park..3 runs for $30 Test and Tune..here we go:
1st run,spun quite a bit on 235/60 drag radials:
R/T .401
60' 2.184
330 5.793
1/8 8.79 MPH 82.16
1000 11.377
1/4 13.59 MPH 100.96
and for what its worth,had a Gtech Pro plugged in,it read a 14.21 @ 98.3
2nd run,spun real,real bad:
R/T .705 graemlins/boring.gif
60' 2.489
330 6.159
1/8 9.169 MPH 82.03
1000 11.747
1/4 13.95 MPH 101.73
..had the Gtech plugged in still,read a 13.22 @ 113.4 MPH
3rd and final run,still spun,but not as bad,and also
had my BEST ever MPH run..had to John Force burnout the drag radials to get a lousy, but better 2.06 60 ft.
R/T .479
60' 2.06
330 5.596
1/8 8.502 83.69 MPH
1000 11.03
1/4 13.20 MPH 103.4 best for day/best ever MPH
..still had the Gtech plugged in,read a 13.79/100.5 MPH
All runs where done with a 750 vacuum Holley,5000 RPM shift point, cross stripe at 4100..235/60 dr's w/20 psi
The Gtech info is just what it is..info
Next time I go to the track,I'm either going to
do some silly burnouts to get these drag radials to hook,or make the passes on some 26 x 8.5-15 ET drags,as obviously,to run in the 12's with 2.73's I need 1.83 or better 60 fts. and I'm sure the slicks will provide that..so no gear changes yet..until I get a few more 12.99's or better with my lazy gears..
And on another note,I met Steve aka onebad66..has a nice 383 powered 66 that ran a 12.55 graemlins/thumbsup.gif Nice guy too...glad to meet up and say hello..nice car as well!
..and I spent $40 on gas to drive 285 miles round trip and still had 1/4 tank left :D
onebadd66 Feb 29th, 04, 7:00 PM E-town was a blast today.Had a a lot of fun.
It was great meeting up with you and your freind today Chris.Hope to hook up with you sometime up in your neck of the woods.
And speaking of hooking up,I think a good set of BFG's or M/T dragradials will do that nice Velle of yours just fine. :D
BTW, my beast for the day was .270 R/T
1.88 60ft.
12.55 1/4
105 MPH
Think there might be 11's in there somewhere graemlins/waving.gif
Bob West Feb 29th, 04, 7:02 PM Its tough to run the number at TNT. You improved the mph number, now ya just gotta hook it up. Congratulations Chris. Hey,I think I'll run out out and buy a G Tech Pro ;)
Steve,I think you'll need a little more mph to get an 11, 110-111 mph will get you there. Still had some nice times though.
TNT was rained out at the Joplin track today, the home track opens next weekend, weather permitting.
mr 4 speed Feb 29th, 04, 7:06 PM Thanks Bob smile.gif
I was all happy about the 103.4 MPH
..I'll sell you a Gtech pro cheap ;)
Actually, playing around with it is what made me try the vacuum carb again..
Motor Martyr Feb 29th, 04, 7:15 PM How packed was it? you must have finished up racing around 3:00? Not too bad, we finished 3 time shots at atco by 3.
Ed was in the gamblers race. When i left, Larry Poppas and Anthony fetch were still in (if you know this crew?).
My website is being a POS and the pictures are taking there time uploading.
mr 4 speed Feb 29th, 04, 7:18 PM Brian,@ 3:30 I was home in the garage drinking a beer :D
..it was packed..quite a few cars..make that more than quite a few..I think we where out of there by 12:30,my last run was at 12:01..1st run was at 10:27
BillsCamino Feb 29th, 04, 7:20 PM Hell, it's Feb. and you're trying to drag race in NJ?
Skip the DRs...you need studded snow tires! tongue.gif
Really Chris, I'm glad you finally got your 1320 fix. It's been a long winter around here too.
We also finally got out yesterday and it felt good.
Motor Martyr Feb 29th, 04, 7:22 PM ...it was over 60 degrees and sunny today.
I cant explain it ethier, lol, just glad the nice weather is here.
jhunt Feb 29th, 04, 7:52 PM chris
Congrats graemlins/thumbsup.gif on the new MPH. It sounds like you guys had a blast. Wish I were there but I spent the day getting ready for the club meeting tomorrow, will you be able to make it?
John 66 graemlins/beers.gif
onebadd66 Feb 29th, 04, 8:00 PM I'll second that.I was Getting real tired of starting the car in the garage and watching it in the mirror in front rock side to side :D
Any way ,it was great to get out and try out the new combo.I have some home work to do.
Nickel333 Feb 29th, 04, 9:03 PM 3 runs for 30 bucks?????? OUCH, thats rough.
wolfehunter Feb 29th, 04, 9:27 PM Chris,
Great to hear you topped your old MPH best! Congrats. I'm sure you'll be working on the traction stuff and end up clobbering your best 1/4 time in short order. My motor goes to the machinist this week.....again. :(
Motor Martyr Feb 29th, 04, 10:14 PM Atco was $15 for 4 runs, but i only stayed for 3, wanted to get home for dinner.
427L88 Feb 29th, 04, 10:39 PM For sure, congrats on the mph! That has to be a jetting difernce between the two carbs, huh?
Oh, and not that I'm trying to justify the Gtech, but I've heard that spinning your tires makes it read quite innacurately.
Hey, it got you to think about a carb swap, and still indicates that the vs is better. We'll have to do a swap in the pits at Lebanon to be sure.
ddeennis Mar 1st, 04, 12:13 AM nice to see you made an improvement.....i wonder if i can get my 396 with my 2.41 gears to out run ya :D ...........well ok maybe not.......but im changing to 2.73 gears and it would be interesting to see what kinda new e.t. i can turn with my combo. since i made alot of new upgrades...........im really suprise how well your combo is doing.....specially running thru all three gears...........must be the torque..........good job on the improvement..........
70_FathomBlueMalibu Mar 1st, 04, 4:05 AM Chris, grats on the new personal MPH best! I'm looking forward to seeing what u can do on some slicks. ;)
What is the timing curve lookin like? Is the carb box-stock or have u tweaked it?
mr 4 speed Mar 1st, 04, 6:24 AM Justin, carb is a $179 remanufactured Holley 3310 I bought from Scoggin-Dickey..I changed the front jets to 74,and I have the lightest spring in the diaphram..other than, out of the box.And my timing is 20* base,38* total by 3K..no vacuum advance.Guys, thanks for the compliments smile.gif
70_FathomBlueMalibu Mar 1st, 04, 6:34 AM Chris, keep the progress info coming. I use a 3310 carb and really love it. As soon as I can get mine roadworthy (and trackworthy, for that matter)....I'll be trying very hard to nail down a good timing curve.
Are you going with no springs in the mechanical advance, as per Tom Baird?
BTW, what size front and rear swaybar is on those F-41 packaged cars? graemlins/waving.gif
mr 4 speed Mar 1st, 04, 7:16 AM Justin I believe the sway bars are 7/8 in the rear 1" in front..not sure. The distributor is an Accel blueprint HEI..when I dropped it in,I checked the timing, found out it had 18* of mechanical advance, set the base at 20* and saw that I had 38* total by 3K and it didn't advance any further than that, even at 4500+..I didn't need to change the springs..in fact,I didn't even look at them to be honest..so I guess I got lucky.
chvl71402 Mar 1st, 04, 7:52 AM Chris,
Congrats on the new best MPH! Sure looks like you can beat that 12.99 now with some traction.
If you match your best 60' with you best MPH should hit high 12.80's. Sure was a nice day to go racing, wishing I could have made it over there. What carb were you running before the 3310?
mr 4 speed Mar 1st, 04, 7:56 AM Dave,I was running a 750 double pumper..its one of the very 1st 4779's..it doesn't even have a "dash" - after the 4779 stamping on the airhorn. Not a bad carb, just needs to be gone thru and dialed in..but I think I'll stick with the 3310..and yes,the ET target will be high 12.8X's with traction graemlins/thumbsup.gif
chvl71402 Mar 1st, 04, 8:54 AM Chris,
Sounds like th VS would be a better choice for your setup. I run a 4779 but my combo is much different with a 3.06 1st and 3.73 gears. I guess the fact that you were unable to hookup yesterday is a sign of more power off the line. Harness that torque with better tires and your there.
427L88 Mar 1st, 04, 9:02 AM Yup, that's what I was thinking. Shucks Chris, all that new torque off the line and now you have to drop $135 a pop on some new treads!
Cheap carb you say!? ;)
mr 4 speed Mar 1st, 04, 9:07 AM Gene, I'll be going to a track rental at Lebanon in May..and I have a pair of 26 x 8.5-15 ET drags to borrow from my friend that bought my old 71 442 clone graemlins/thumbsup.gif time to eliminate (within reason) the traction variable :D
Guess what I'll be trying out at the track rental..
mc71454 Mar 1st, 04, 9:12 AM Hey Chris,
Nice going on the mph..traction is tough the first few days.
At the track rental in May, if you get close with the improved traction, I have a little adjustment for you that will get you another .03 or better in 60 ft. It will take about 5 minutes to do and I will bring the parts...(two very small e-clips).
later
mr 4 speed Mar 1st, 04, 9:13 AM Tom,I will have info on the track rental today..I will be in touch later this afternoon
mc71454 Mar 1st, 04, 9:22 AM Cool, no wait...Kewl !!
GRN69CHV Mar 1st, 04, 12:18 PM Chris,
FWIW, I intend to run a VS Holley. Back when we converted the SSJA to brackets (1979 or so) , we dumped the Q-Jet and that's all we ran was a 780 Holley. You might want to run a tighter spring in the diaphragm to give you a little roll out before the power rolls on. The real world difference is probably very little, but your engine probably pulls a ton of vaccuum that even with a tighter spring would still open it quickly.
mr 4 speed Mar 1st, 04, 12:43 PM With the lightest spring, the secondaries are fully open by 4500 or so,maybe 4600..I don't think the second from lightest would be best, but who knows..
-SS454- Mar 1st, 04, 4:04 PM wow your gtech was givin you some funky numbers. Mine has never been that inconsistant. The trap speed is always within a few mph, and the ET is usually pretty close in an auto car. Dont know how accurate it is, but at least its somewhat consistant.
mr 4 speed Mar 1st, 04, 4:35 PM The Gtech is not consistant at all on the track..on the street, yes, but not on the track..
70_FathomBlueMalibu Mar 2nd, 04, 1:11 AM Chris, I think Tom is going to show you the lil trick about running no springs in the mechanical advance. I believe it will help your timing come in quicker and increase some low-end torque. Of course this only helps if you can hook it up. ;) I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to this season.
Am I right, Tom?
BTW, Chris, have you tried removing the front swaybar and using the "shock nut" trick yet? Those 2 things alone made WORLDS's of difference in my launch. graemlins/hurray.gif
mr 4 speed Mar 2nd, 04, 7:26 AM I've done the shock trick before..didn't seem to do too much with my combo, but I will try it again and I will not remove or unbolt the front sway bar.Next trip to the track,I'm just going to heat those drag radials up real good, and see what kind of 60 ft. I get..and I'll also be trying a pair of slicks too.
Traction is my only issue, and thats what is keeping me out of the 12's
mc71454 Mar 2nd, 04, 9:10 AM Justin,
You are correct. I can actually control my 60 ft from 1.50's to 1.60's by easing the tire hit with the springs in my distributor. My motor is very sensitive to the timing curve rate..it works, what else can I say.
I rememer 10secBu with a post about getting drag radials to hook. His information is more up to date. I remember my own experience was too little/too much and I was toast that was 4 years ago.

Motor Martyr Mar 2nd, 04, 11:57 AM Jim,
I might be at Atco this weekend. email me, if you want the details.
68chevelle533 Mar 2nd, 04, 11:44 PM Chris,
Nice numbers, very impressive for a 273 car, those 454s can sure crank out some torque. :D Have you considered an overdrive transmission? You could run a 200 or 700r4/with a 373 out back for performance and still cruise the highway in OD. I have been looking at installing one in my 70, but new projects and $ have made me put it on the back burner.
kboorman Mar 3rd, 04, 12:23 AM Chris, what about that G-tech thing? My wife wants to know what to buy me for a graduation present (39 yrs old & just getting my engineering degree graemlins/clonk.gif ), and I thought that one of these would be a good idea. I bought myself a '66 that's a nice cruiser, and I'd like to do some real world evaluations after each upgrade. I plan to build it into a mid 10 sec machine that is completely streetable. Do you think the G-tech is consistent enough (if not totally accurate) to realistically measure performance gains? Also, why do you think that it isn't as accurate on the track? Thanks, Kirk.
mr 4 speed Mar 3rd, 04, 2:05 PM Kirk,if you take an average of my 3 runs.. timeslip vs. gtech,it works out to be a 1 tenth difference between them..my times where not consistent,so neither was the gtech..put it this way,it doesn't have to be accurate,as long as its consistent, and if you want to evaluate changes in your combo,it might work..it worked for me in a way..enough for me to try my vacuum carb again, which turned out well IMHO.But all in all,no replacement for a timeslip..
a VS would work better on your particular combo, i would think. but those times didn't show it did they? isn't that several tenths off of your previous best? the lack of traction almost always raises mph at the other end, at least that's what i've always experienced. in an under geared car especially. only way to tell for sure is to make back to back runs hooking up. ;)
if you do run them head to head with the slicks on it, please post the results ok? i'm thinking that when you hook it up good you're going to realize how badly you need gears. ;)
mr 4 speed Mar 4th, 04, 7:16 AM Originally posted by m71:

I'm just having fun with my car,its not a "race car"..believe me,its quite the awesome feeling to drive your car 270 miles round trip, with a low rpm cruising speed to boot, run low 13's and drive home. Now if I was going for maximum ET,I'd swap in some 3.73's and a 10" convertor in 3500-3800 flash range, and run slicks. But,I wouldn't want to drive the car 270 miles round trip then.My goal is just a few more high 12 second timeslips with these 2.73's and I will achieve that goal graemlins/thumbsup.gif
