: '416 sbc heads
hauntedz28 May 30th, 07, 6:18 PM Well, I went ahead and picked up the whole lot of sbc parts last nite. I discovered that the heads were 305 heads. '416's. The exhaust had been ported and polished, manely race valves, z28 springs, arp screw in studs,ect.... The heads havent been ran after the rebuild. They were built by a performance shop and I have the phone # to the guy who built them. What questions should I ask the builder of the heads when I call him? And in the meantime. What can expect from these heads on a 350? Can I get some good rpms (6200) and still gain power, or are they quick high torque, low rpm heads?
Thanks
pdq67 May 30th, 07, 8:11 PM You need to cc them to know what your CR will end up b/c they are small chambered compared to the old 64 and 66 cc double-hump heads!! Like maybe still 58 cc's???
Outside of that they are decent heads!!
Should have 160 cc intake ports stock..

hauntedz28 May 30th, 07, 10:13 PM So just take them to a head shop and ask them to cc them?
pdq67 May 31st, 07, 8:03 AM Try it is all I can say??
Some more performance oriented will and some won't take the time..

TMessick May 31st, 07, 8:24 PM I've got these on my 307 right now. Mine were ~157cc ports, 58cc chambers. Stock valves are 1.84"i, 1.5"e, but you should check your valve sizes as well (probably 1.94/1.5 if they've been given some love). Various threads around talking abour flow numbers on these, especially from the 3rd gen camaro/firebird crowd. Here are a few:

Bottom line -- for a moderate/street 350 these should be a pretty decent head, but I'd think you'll be pretty choked up before you get to 6200 RPM.
hauntedz28 May 31st, 07, 11:36 PM thanks for the info! Is there anything I can do to keep from choking out in the high rpms? I geared at 4.56 and Im at 6300 on the stripe. If not, I can sell the heads. I thought since they have been worked that maybe I could use them in the future on another 350 block. As you can tell I dont know much about something, nothing , anything or everything. I'm trying to learn.
TMessick Jun 5th, 07, 7:28 PM If you want the thing to keep pulling at higher revs, you just need enough flow. Hard to guess how much your heads have been worked over and what the flow numbers would be. Even then, I don't have enough of a handle on how much flow you need for XXXX RPM for a 355, so I'm of little use. If you really want a good handle on where these heads would choke out, you should get them flow tested at a reputable shop (and bug some folks around here to get a handle on how much flow you need to pull 6200 with a 355).
pdq67 Jun 5th, 07, 8:41 PM I would think hard about 1.94"/1.60" valves and a lift-limited roundy-round cam here w/ these heads!
Notice the max. flow at .450" lift in onna the lists!
I have a .500" net lift w/ 1.6 ratio rockers solid cam for my -601's for another junk292 engine!
And good big valve -291's for another junk301 engine..
I just have to create the about 10.25 to 1 CR. that I want w/ both possible combinations depending on availability of cheap flat-top or domed pistons!!

hauntedz28 Jun 17th, 07, 12:41 AM i measured the valves, and they are 1.94"/1.60". Now I need to find out if they are 58cc or if they have been worked to 64cc.
