I want to use an internal regulator alternator on my 71 Chevelle. Can I remove voltage regulator completely? I have seen alot of Chevelles at shows with this done.I have the alternator PLUG IN that I cut off of a mid 80's Cutlass. What do I connect the two wires to? Any info on swapping over would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

From the Chevelle Tech Reference page: http://www.chevelles.com/techref/ftecref14.html Workss like a charm.

This method is better, and uses the original wiring. You do not need to cut any wires. The plug in that you have (off of a mid 80's Cutlass), just release the wires from the original one and insert into the new one. (they do go in a certain way.

When I upgraded to a CS130 alternator, I disconnected the four-wire plug from the external regulator, and connected the blue and brown wires together on the plug. This retained the connection to the idiot light on the dash and allowed enough current to energize the alternator windings. The regulator can be removed as it is no longer needed.

Both the Tech Reference hosted on this site; and the MAD diagram have a mistake.

Both assume that you don't care about having the correct color codes at the alternator. In addition, the Tech Reference method disables the remote voltage sensing; not a good idea especially with older vehicles where the wiring may be somewhat deteriorated anyway.

To answer your questions; YES you can totally remove the old external regulator; and all you actually need are the alternator electrical connector you already have, and two two-to-three inch long jumper wires made from 14 gauge wire and crimp-on male blade ends. (and solder and/or crimps along with tape or heat-shrink to connect your new alternator pigtails to the rest of the vehicle harness.)

The diagram below preserves the color codes, AND preserves the remote voltage sensing. Note that the jumper wires at the old external regulator connector are not in the same positions as the MAD system.
