hey... names joe,and heres just one of many questions ill probably ask later. ive gota 69' pretty much stock chevelle. 307, witha rochester 2 barrel carb, dual exhaust. before the question , any help with gettin her running good ata budget would be greatly appreciated, since i prefer doing things myself to the car. my problem is that ive replaced both collectors, and exhaust manifold gaskets, and yet im still getting tons of exhaust fumes into the cab. so much so that my eyes actually look like if ive been smoking a "blunt" after just a few miles on the road. am imissing something.? i dont think the fuel mixture screws are running too rich, but its the only thing i can think of. any help?????

Where does your exhaust exit? That really doesnt sound like a very healthy car to be driving.

Try replacing the trunk seal. The exhaust will swirl behind the car and go in around th trunk lid if the seal is bad.

The exhaust tips should exit outside the car at the bumber, not the side. You will get fumes if the exhaust exits beneath the car, even at highway speeds.

i dumped my exhaust right after the axle, and i regret doing that everyday. you smell fumes every time you drive that dang thing. i wish i would have run something different... doesnt help that my trunk seal is bad either. oh well one of the many things i have to do to the car before carcraft....... my advice is to run the exhaust as far back out the car as you can.

Another vote for the trunk seal, or maybe a loose trunk latch. This happened to me, and what really threw me off was that the smell got worse when I was driving with the windows open, so I thought it was coming from the front of the car. Seems like the wind created kind of a vacuum inside the car, and the fumes were sucked in through the leaking seal every time I cracked the windows open. When I finally tried a new seal, the smell went away.

I had that same problem, although mine originated at the engine compartment. It seems a prior owner removed a few firewall seals (either that or they rotted away as was the case with my clutch seal) and speedometer seal was missing (firewall insulation was missing two of the "push-throughs" that keep it in place. Since I removed the entire dash, heater and wiring, I replaced everything and voila! no more exhaust problem.
