: Car was running good til a rod exited the pan

First run was 11.13 and then a 10.90 at 122. Third run was hoping for better things but it blew going through the top end traps and slowed to 11.13 (same as super street index at this track altitude).

This was a basic station wagon oval port 10.5 compression 454 with a relatively hot cam on pump gas.

Actually the combination was working pretty good and too bad it did not stay together. Shift light at 6600 and rpm limiter at 7000 so it is not like I really abused it. Oil pressure was well over 60 psi.

Number one rod made holes in both sides of pan, oil and coolant all over the front end and tires/brakes and under the car to the 14 inch tires. Feel fortunate that it stayed straight and upright.

One lesson learned from this is not to skimp on the short block. It is not worth driving through coolant and oil at high speed.

Can't wait to get it apart and see for sure the failure mechanism. It was a used motor and never had the pan off to see the bottom end.

Sorry to hear that. Were there any noises leading up to last morbid minute?

Which car was it in?

It was in the 67 Nova shown in my signature photo, so I will be driving the 66 Beaumont til I get it fixed.

No noises or warning, it was a bit strange to see the big red autometer oil light comes on while the yellow shift light is on and then the engine dies, a bit of clatter, a bit of smoke, then quiet, wondering if the turbo 400 is going to go into orbit and of course the car is starting to skate just a bit and so you focus on keeping it straight and getting slowed down.

my worst nightmare.
sorry to hear that, could have been worse.
was that a stock bottom end? mind sharing some details to the setup? it could probably save alot of people some headaches down the road.:(

Tough luck. Sounds like it was good running setup.

Sorry to hear about the broken parts. Only one thing to do. Go faster!!

It is probably my fault and driver error that caused this particular engine to let go. Should have had the rpm limiter at 6500 (20/20 hindsight!)

If I would have kept my shift light at 6300 instead of 6600 and probably shifting a bit late where it was going to 6800/6900 it might still be running today.

But gotta have a short block that can handle 7000 rev's with 100 percent reliability.

That was tough luck Sandy, I was in the Staging lanes when it came apart on you . I saw your 10.91 pass and it looked good. Best time I could muster out of my Chevelle was a 12.30 @106.5 with a 1.60 60 ft, so I got a little improvement, but it is back to the drawing board. It was good meeting you Sandy, Are you coming up for Power to the Pavement?
Cheers

Great meeting you Bear also. I will be there with the 66 Beaumont. And if I get some time this week will replace the 2400 with a 3000 converter. Your 60 foot is really good. My Beaumont only does 1.80+ sixty foot times with slicks. I would have thought your mph would be in the 109/110 range according to your ET.

Sorry to hear of the misfortune..

The problem is I am running out of RPM on the top end. It just won't pull past 5900 rpm. I am at 6000 RPM 400 ft befor the traps and it just kind of mosies along there. I am thinking more cam, something that will make it pull to 6500 RPM. Launching on the trans brake at 4900 rpm it slows my 60 ft down to 1.75 +, but if I foot brake it and launch at 3000 RPM, it brings my 60 ft down to the low 1.6xx, so I am thinking it is time to go to a solid roller cam that has a higher RPM torque curve. Or maby I should just order that 582 Shafiroff I have been eyeing :D .
Cheers

could you save anything or all destroyed?

I guess that explains your low ET for mph. If you calculate the difference in time between going 105 mph and 110 mph, there is very little difference in ET.

You are getting a really good launch and up to speed quick and then carrying your speed to the end. Very good performance for a really nice street Chevelle.

Based on my recent experience, I would be careful about pushing the rpm's up very much on your motor. Too much risk for what you will gain.

Not totally decided yet, but I think I will go with a stroker assembly 496 and make it work to 6500 on pump gas. That should get me in the 10.50 range and that is as fast as I want to go. Time to get the car consistent and dialed in and do some bracket racing.

It was the timing chain that broke that started the total destruction of cylinders #1 and #2.

Looks like heads, cam and crank are salvageable.
