Hi, I was just curious if these two cranks would fit in a 396/402 to make a stroker motor? Also, How did GM put together these two motors to make the 427 and the 454? Thanks

A 396, 402 and most 427's do not have the clearance notch at the bottom inside of the cylinders walls to accomodate a 4" stroke crankshaft of a 454. The crank is the same for a 396 and a 427, both are 3.76" stroke

454 = 4.250" bore x 4.00" stroke
427 = 4.250" bore x 3.76" stroke
396 = 4.096" bore x 3.76" stroke

A 402 is just a .030 over 396

Keith Black (www.kb-silvolite.com) lists a piston #361 for 454 crank/6.135 rod into 396/402 blocks. For bores of 4.125(427.6 cubes) thru 4.185(440 cubes).

Is there anything wrong with doing something like this to a 402 block, or should I just look for a 454 block. thanks for all the help

I have read that some 396 blocks will swallow a stock 454 rotating ass'y with no grinding at all!!

I do know, my '74/'75, 454 P/U block swallowed my 496 rotating ass'y with NO grinding at all except a schosh on the oil-pump.

This shop called speed-o-motive out my way sells a kit: 396 to 434 stroker kit with a 4" stroke crank. I emailed them on what parts I need and the machining that needs to be done. I'll let you know what they say.
