Welcome MightyMouse61!

You said:
"well, i've been reading through this thread at the invite of kettbo and it looks like i'm way late in the game.
well anyway, i'm the owner of a 1970 Chevelle Malibu with a little 383 under the hood. it was a 307 car before someone blew it up and replaced it with the 383. i've done some minor upgrades to it while i was stateside. but i was just a little dissapointed with my times when i first purchased the car.
heres the skinny:
383 built by S and S motors in Spokane
appear to be regular stock heads
balanced rotating assembly
an elgin cam with very mild specs
msd pro billet dist.
holley street avenger 670cfm
some no-name long tube headers flowing out to some noisy glasspacks
th350 w/2200 stall converter
10 bolt rear with one tire fryer diff. the gears feel like 3.00
best time at Pacific Raceways is a 14.5 at 93mph
i was going to build another small block for it but i've been looking at cost.
for the power level i want, it would be just as expensive as a big block.

my pops is a die hard SBC guy and thats all i've worked with. i want to try something new. plus, my thought is that the chevelle was meant to have a fire breathing rat under the hood. moving 4,000lbs for a 1/4 mile in 10 seconds is a hell of a task. i've seen small blocks do it but at what cost and how long did they last?"

AGAIN WELCOME!
The guys in greater Seattle started the thread. I'm trying to get the greater Tacoma area guys more active.

I bought my 70 Elky OCT 05 with mild 350/th350/ and 2.56 posi. Minimal power. I put small chamber-reworked 305 4v heads on it to raise the CR.
This helped some. About May 06 I bought a 400 SBC shortblock core. I shortly realized that for the power level I wanted, a midling 454 was the answer, not a built 400 SBC. After several horse-trades noted in another thread, I'm getting close to having all I need to build a 40-over 454 (462) late this summer/early fall after the ROTC Camp. I've not built an engine since 1993 when I built the 427 for my 68RatVette, can't wait to do this next BBC.

Just last week I had pal Darryl installed the 3.42 gears in my 12-bolt. Some testing this weekend.

You are FAR FROM LATE!
I'm preparing to build. Young gun Brett from Seattle is gathering parts, I just swayed him from SBC to BBC with help from the local fellas.
Lots of smarts on Team Chevelle and on the NW Group. I am looking forward to meeting you and seeing this 70 Chevelle of yours.

Righto! MightyMouse does sound kinda lame for a guy wanting to build a RAT MOTOR.

I was off between 1:30 and 3:34 this afternoon. Got home...looked at my new (expensive) Azeleas wilting. Wheelbarrow tire was flat. Unsnapped the tonneau, re-arranged the stuff left in there from the visit last week, loaded the wheelbarrow and down to the gas station. Returned to the house, dug up the Azeleas. Had to cut a few roots with the chainsaw. Planted the Azeleas where the fir had been a few weeks ago. Wifey arrived, she caught me working so I earned points. She thought the tonneau cover was off the Elky for those Elky doors she spied in the garage....so down a few points til I told her I got two doors for the price of one, a sale, weeks ago! Anyway, I only had to move the plants a bit, got credit for working,,,,,then got cleaned-up and back to work for a bit.

MightyMouse, I'll be vic bldg 11D39 on N Fort tomorrow morning if you are up to it. Wanna see this mean ride of yours. Also, gotta see what kind of smoke the new gearset makes tomorrow.....

Hey I'd be happy to roll up there in my Chevelle. Only problem is, I'm in Afghanistan. lol. I don't think you got my PM. I've been here for about 3 months. I guess I should change my location on here. I would only have about 9 months left until I got home to work on the chevelle but with these new 15 month tours they're pushing on us, I'll be here another year. Its not too bad though. More money.

Well, what I've been looking at are World Products' 509ci/540hp and Speedomotive 496ci/580hp. I'm just looking for 500hp to the wheels, and a bottom end able to handle a 200 shot of spray. I can probably build something for a little cheaper but I don't really got that kind of time. When I get back stateside, I want to be rolling as fast as possible.

I plan on doing everything in stages. I got it worked out to about 18,000 rough estimate on parts.

i got to roll right now, i'll be back later

I missed your PM saying you were in Afghanistan. I can't imagine your cruising around there is too much fun. I saw a lot of late 60s style Chevy PU's in N Iraq and more than a few 57 Chevy 4-doors.

Your crate motor ambitions sound nice! Sounds more "go-fast" rather than "hi-perf cruising". I'm sure FRYNTR will have some suggestions ref crate engines and drag stuff. Not too much happens around Tacoma so I gotta keep my Elky roadworthy, 100mile cruises. I'm planning a $2000 engine made from left-overs, trades, gift, etc, Charity Rat. She must able to cruise but have enough nutz to beat Ben's 454HO in his 68 SS Meeno. Thinking 450 horse and 500 ft lbs torque. I want broad average powerband.

Stay safe and thank you for your service~!

I haven't done any cruising out here. Last deployment I did my share of convoys but this year I think they're trying to put less people out on the road. I'm a Fobbit(never leave the wire). My machinist responsibilities keep me in the rear with the gear. My welder and I have made a set of headers and an exhaust for a John Deere Gator. lol. its loud as hell and quicker than the rest of them.
anyway, the first thing I plan on throwing in the chevelle is the rear end-suspension set up. I've been looking at the Hotchkis TVS set up as well as the new Edelbrock suspension set up. For the rear end, I'm thinking of either Moser 12 bolt or the Strange S60. I also want to do a four wheel disc conversion on it. I'm not looking for anything special there, just something to improve from the four wheel drums i have now(deathtrap). Theres no fun in having four wheel drums, doing 100 on the freeway and someone pulling out in front of you(did i just admit to speeding?).
anyway, i'm trying to get all the other stuff(suspension, brakes, tranny and rear, some paint and interior) out of the way first before i throw a beast of an engine in and not be able to handle it or just break stuff left and right.

Always a VERY GOOD idea to ensure the ride can stop before you put the killer engine into it. I had a complete brake job done on my rig a month ago. Cost a bunch but a warranty and all-new components....like life insurance.
I have pwr Frt Disc, no trouble at all stopping. Gotta upgrade the basic suspension too.

Now I have traffic, police, and fast cars. Iraq I had an abandoned airfield and a GATOR. No justice..... Love that you put headers on your rig at "work"

I do happen to have a spare 68-72 A-Body 12-bolt housing.....
Dunno if I should build it as a spare "freeway" unit with 2 series posi and 2.73gears or sell it........would need c-clip elim kit, HD axles, spool, etc. We'll talk more about this later......just do not go buy a complete rear for big $$$$ before talking to me.
I'm fairly well extablished up here, tours 1990-e 94 and Nov99-present so I have more than a few automotive contacts up here.

Yeah, that sounds like a plan. I probably would go for a cheaper alternative than a brand new rear end, if given the chance. It'll be a while from now though, so just hold on to that thought. lol. Anyway, I appreciate it.

Very nice afternoon yesterday. I had RatVette out for a cruise. Nothing like rowing the 4-spd fronted by 432 cubes of Romping Rat.
You'll never go back to Mouse once ya taste the sweet power of Rat.

On the way home yesterday, was back in the Elky. Some guy was pulled up beside me in his S-10 4WD. He said, " I had a ride in my bud's 1970 LS-6 Chevelle over the weekend. That thing scarred the crap outa me~ It could be faster than my crotch-rocket!!!"

Nice freeking weather all week. I'm sitting here in-processing cadre at N Fort while several of the NW fellas are out running their cars at Bremerton. Last PM self and an older gearhead from down the street tweaked and tuned my 1968 RATVETTE which had been running goofy. I suppose I had a manifold vacuum leak, was 12-13" the other day, now in the 14-15" range now, excellent considering the .542/.542" 235/235 deg dur @ .050" 111 LSA cam.
Tonight I have to back the timing down a bit....she liked 20 deg on the crank but the starter-battery combo does not like this...especially when warm. I'll be looking to limit the distrib mech adv.

How is the GATOR running?
