"well, i've been reading through this thread at the invite of kettbo and it looks like i'm way late in the game.
well anyway, i'm the owner of a 1970 Chevelle Malibu with a little 383 under the hood. it was a 307 car before someone blew it up and replaced it with the 383. i've done some minor upgrades to it while i was stateside. but i was just a little dissapointed with my times when i first purchased the car.
heres the skinny:
383 built by S and S motors in Spokane
appear to be regular stock heads
balanced rotating assembly
an elgin cam with very mild specs
msd pro billet dist.
holley street avenger 670cfm
some no-name long tube headers flowing out to some noisy glasspacks
th350 w/2200 stall converter
10 bolt rear with one tire fryer diff. the gears feel like 3.00
best time at Pacific Raceways is a 14.5 at 93mph
i was going to build another small block for it but i've been looking at cost.
for the power level i want, it would be just as expensive as a big block.
my pops is a die hard SBC guy and thats all i've worked with. i want to try something new. plus, my thought is that the chevelle was meant to have a fire breathing rat under the hood. moving 4,000lbs for a 1/4 mile in 10 seconds is a hell of a task. i've seen small blocks do it but at what cost and how long did they last?"
AGAIN WELCOME!
The guys in greater Seattle started the thread. I'm trying to get the greater Tacoma area guys more active.
I bought my 70 Elky OCT 05 with mild 350/th350/ and 2.56 posi. Minimal power. I put small chamber-reworked 305 4v heads on it to raise the CR.
This helped some. About May 06 I bought a 400 SBC shortblock core. I shortly realized that for the power level I wanted, a midling 454 was the answer, not a built 400 SBC. After several horse-trades noted in another thread, I'm getting close to having all I need to build a 40-over 454 (462) late this summer/early fall after the ROTC Camp. I've not built an engine since 1993 when I built the 427 for my 68RatVette, can't wait to do this next BBC.
Just last week I had pal Darryl installed the 3.42 gears in my 12-bolt. Some testing this weekend.
You are FAR FROM LATE!
I'm preparing to build. Young gun Brett from Seattle is gathering parts, I just swayed him from SBC to BBC with help from the local fellas.
Lots of smarts on Team Chevelle and on the NW Group. I am looking forward to meeting you and seeing this 70 Chevelle of yours.
