: Transfer case gear oil?

Does anyone know if it would be OK to use Limited Slip 80W - 90 gear oil in the transfer case of a 4X4? I'm servicing differentials and the transfer case and the differentials needed hypoid or limited slip gear oil shich is all I have. Is there anything in the limited slip oil that would mess the transfer case up if I used it in there as well? If it poses a problem I just need to run for some standard gear oil but thought maybe I could use this limited slip gear oil up. Can I get away with it?

Thanks

I think you would do better to put tranny fluid in it instead, that's what they used to use. That gear oil is just too thick IMO.

if this is for your 98, then i think it takes ATF instead of gear oil.
check the owner's manual. i think they started using ATF in the 80's sometime.

Derrick,

Sorry, I should have been more specific. It is for my wife's Sequioa and there is a tag on the case that says 75W90 but I have a few quarts of this 80W90 limited slip oil I thought I could just use up. It was leftover from the differentials. I don't have any standard gear oil in the garage and rather than going to get some I thought maybe I could just use the limited slip oil in the transfer case as well. Should probably just go get the correct oil and be done with it! Just wanted to save a trip with gas sailing to $3.09 around here and I'm many miles from an auto parts store! Thanks for the help guys.

My 70's NP-203 uses 30 weight motor oil, any thing thicker and it doesn't get splashed around correctly. I'd check the manufacturers recommendations in the manual or data plate and go with that.
