: Different kind of help (perhaps a little redneck ingenuity)
FireRescueFL Jan 26th, 04, 4:24 PM OK guys, here's the thing. I was out riding my dirtbike on my fiancee's father's land and I found a small-block Chevy out in the middle of it. The engine is in a plastic bag that looks like it's been there for a few years at least. I can't get my truck back there to get it due to some really soft sand where it's at but I really want to get that thing out of there before he sells the land to the developers (supposedly at the beginning of next month).
Anyone have any ideas how I can get this thing back to my truck from where it's sitting. I can get my truck within about 100-150 yards of it. This is driving me crazy trying to figure out how I can pull this off. graemlins/clonk.gif

64postie Jan 26th, 04, 4:40 PM Chris grab about six guys an lift it in :D
a sheet of plywood a rope and the hitch on your truck come to mind...
anvilhead Jan 26th, 04, 4:50 PM roll it in to a small kiddie swiming pool. Then make a hole for a rope, pull to truck.

old66ss Jan 26th, 04, 5:06 PM Disassemble & carry it out!
airrj Jan 26th, 04, 5:33 PM Maybe a combination of the above. Dissassmble some, put it on a sled of sorts, and have a few buddies help drag it out. Unless you have 300' to 450' of rope laying around. Would they miss a few rope bags from the Rescue? :D
RacnJsn95 Jan 26th, 04, 7:09 PM Tie a wagon ( IE: Radio Flyer ) to your bike, throw the engine in there, and tow back to the truck. You may have to take it easy...
pdq67 Jan 26th, 04, 7:20 PM Heck, that 1/2" thick, 4x8 sheet of plywood and a rope on your bike in low gear sounds like a winner to me!! Just do it slow and careful like..

rthlc Jan 26th, 04, 9:00 PM I once pried my disabled jeep 150 yards out swamp in 2' of water by levering under the rear bumper with a fence post, slow going but after about 4 hours I got it within reach of my tow strap and pulled it the rest of the way out with my truck.
Her Malibu Jan 26th, 04, 9:26 PM Hey guys,
Before you get to carried away make sure its not a 265ci out of a 78 MonteCarlo graemlins/clonk.gif
BigRed-L72 Jan 26th, 04, 9:28 PM why do you think it`s worth anything at all?
4 bolt? steel crank? why would it be dumped out there if it was worth anything? did you pull the pan? it`s probably an ol` derelict 305
Dragn70 Jan 26th, 04, 9:44 PM The hood off of most any ford, a good rope and a 4-wheeler will do the trick. If it were me, I would be wondering how it got there.

travis g Jan 27th, 04, 12:19 AM I guess the big question is WHY is it out there. I have found some pretty neat old motors like that but usually they are rusted beyond repair, or have been brutally blown up and just dumped. It's pretty rare to find something salvageable like that just laying out in a field.
I would also run the numbers too...like stated above it may not be worth dragging out even if it is useable.
wrencheadblues Jan 27th, 04, 12:33 AM field motor - yah - I got one out this summer , a 409 / 380hp blk only , when cutting hay and allmost took off my cicle on my mower , lucky though I could move it with the tractor , but it was in a feild for a reason , water jacket outside rail split , but now I,m told newer tech alows us to weld it up. hope you find some strong buds to help you move it or hope for a freeze to set the ground up hard. GOOD LUCK finding someones old Z-28 302 tongue.gif
sapper92310 Jan 27th, 04, 11:21 AM I would take a rope and run it around a big tree, hook one end to your truck and one to the engine. That should work, I pulled a 283 outta a guys back yard like that. :D
But the engine was rusted BAD :(
bored&stroked Jan 27th, 04, 4:45 PM We did the same thing. Riding dirt bikes and off road go carts around in a field, we came upon a SBC. Made my friends help me load it on one go cart and drive it back sitting on top of the SB. Not a comfy ride I can promise you that.

They break down so much that just setting the engine on the hood might make the engine never stop burning oil or spinning cam bearings.
Funny thing how it got there actually. Someone was crusing around in their 69 z28 camaro and the engine just plain fell out of it. They got the car all the way home before they realized what happened. They looked all over but couldn't figure out where it fell out. lol

Maybe what you have come across is the rare but beautiful SBC plant. I hear they grow well in sandy soil with good drainage. In mucky soil, the plant will rust. They are hard to find, but their flower is a steel crank 327. Good find. I'm still looking for the elusive money tree. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Texas70 Jan 28th, 04, 9:58 AM Roll it over, onto a good piece of plywood. Tie a rope to the plywood (notch the edges for rope) and pull to solid ground with your truck.
Of course the undocumented migrant worker and beer is a great idea also.. graemlins/waving.gif
FireRescueFL Jan 29th, 04, 2:12 PM Well guys, I figured out that my in-laws jeep and my trailor make for a great sand-bogging experience. :D
Also, it looks like some of you were right. The block is cracked and I don't think it's going to be repairable. The good news is, the crank and rods look great. So, at least I'll have that going for my budget Monte SS motor. I'm gonna take the parts up to my machinist next week and have them checked out so I'll keep yall posted.
